Job summary

Innovative Defense Technologies (IDT) in Mount Laurel, NJ, seeks a Systems Engineer for the Warfare Systems team. The role focuses on designing, implementing, and testing software across C, C++, Python, JavaScript, and Java in on-site environments.

You will analyze legacy code, modernize it using brownfield/greenfield approaches, and prototype next-gen AI/ML systems while engaging with customers to refine requirements. A Secret clearance and in-office presence are required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Systems Engineering or a related field; equivalent full-time professional experience accepted.
• 0-5 years of full-time professional experience.
• Ability to travel up to 10% of the time.
• Familiarity with combat system design and software.
• Familiarity and experience with developing tactical systems software on DOD programs.
• Experience with C, C++, Python, and/or Java programming languages.
• Proficiency in Linux OS environments, including shell scripting.
• Ability to decompose and document requirements and specifications.
• Understanding of distributed systems, algorithms, data structures and design patterns (Strangler Pattern).
• Experience with Agile software development processes.
• Proficiency with Git CM environment.
• Comfortable with DevSecOps practices.
• Ability to translate vague customer requirements into refined visions.
• Identify and describe algorithmic complexity.
• On-site work with potential hybrid flexibility.

Responsibilities

• Design, implement, and test complex software in C, C++, Python, JavaScript, and Java.
• Analyze legacy monolithic software, recompile and refactor toward modernization.
• Assess and deconstruct Navy tactical system code for Surface Navy Combat systems.
• Prototype next-generation solutions using AI/ML, distributed processing, and modeling.
• Interact with customers to elicit requirements and document agreements.
• Present project cost, schedule, and technical progress to leadership.
• Develop software architecture including hardware/software interfaces.
• Develop user, functional, and technical requirements for tactical systems.
• Participate in design and code reviews.
• Integrate components into complex environments.
• Support test and integration at IDT labs and LBTS.
