Job summary

Innovative Defense Technologies (IDT) is seeking a Tactical Systems Engineer to join the Warfare Systems team in Mount Laurel, NJ. You will architect and refactor legacy weapons software into a modern, microservices-based platform for cloud-native and edge deployments.

Join a multi-discipline team delivering real-time analytics, AI/ML capabilities, cybersecurity, and combat-system software for Navy platforms. Requires a Secret clearance and on-site work with some travel.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, System Engineering, or related field, or equivalent professional experience.
• 5+ years of full‑time professional experience.
• Ability to travel up to 10% of the time.
• Experience with combat system design and software, ideally AEGIS or Ship Self Defense System (SSDS).
• Familiarity with developing tactical systems software on DoD programs.
• Experience with C, C++, Python, and/or Java.
• Adept with Linux OS environments, including shell scripting.
• Ability to decompose and document requirements and specifications.
• Understanding of distributed systems, data structures and design patterns, esp. Strangler Pattern.
• Experience with Agile processes and Git CM.

Responsibilities

• Design, implement, and test complex software in C, C++, Python, JavaScript, and Java.
• Analyze legacy monolithic software and refactor to modernize using brownfield/greenfield methods.
• Assess and deconstruct Navy tactical system code for Surface Navy Combat systems.
• Prototype next-gen solutions using AI/ML, distributed processing, and modeling.
• Elicit requirements from customers and document agreements.
• Present project cost, schedule, and technical progress to leadership.
• Develop software architecture including hardware and software interfaces.
• Develop user, functional, and technical requirements for tactical systems.
• Participate in design and code reviews and integrate components.
• Support test and integration activities at IDT labs and LBTS.
