Job summary

Democrats for Education Reform (DFER) seeks a Vice President, Advocacy to build and lead our state-based advocacy program, aligning it with the executive engagement strategy and our national policy framework.

The VP will partner with governors and their senior teams, executive branch leaders, legislators, and in-state advocates to advance DFER priorities through executive action, budgets, legislation, and regulation.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree in public policy, political science, or related field a plus.
• 8-10+ years of state policy or legislative experience, including senior roles.
• Experience with governors’ offices or state agencies, budget/policy implementation preferred.
• Direct lobbying experience and contract management experience.

Responsibilities

• Stand up and oversee DFER's new state-based advocacy function.
• Lead state policy strategy across executive, budget, legislative, and regulatory channels.
• Build and manage governors' relationships and in-state advocates.
• Develop and coordinate coalitions and communications for priority policies.
• Lead budgeting, contracts, and operations of the Advocacy function.
