Wichita State University is seeking a part-time Civic Engagement Intern to support voter engagement activities on the Main Campus in Wichita, KS. This student assistant will perform administrative and outreach tasks under the supervision of the Coordinator of Civic Engagement.

Responsibilities include presenting on voter registration, organizing workshops, tabling at events, and coordinating one civic event per semester while engaging with community partners and the Shockers Vote! Coalition.

Qualifications

  • Required Education: High School diploma or equivalent; enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours at Wichita State University.
  • Preferred: strong written and verbal communication; attention to detail; ability to facilitate voter engagement in a nonpartisan manner.

  • Plan civic engagement workshops for students and student leaders.
  • Table at campus events to increase awareness of civic engagement opportunities.
  • Support civic engagement initiatives and civic holiday programming, incl. National Voter Registration Day, Vote Early Day, Election Day activities.
  • Plan, implement, and facilitate one civic engagement event during the semester.
  • Participate in community partner meetings and trainings as feasible.
  • Serve as a student representative on the Shockers Vote! Coalition.
  • Meet weekly with the Coordinator of Civic Engagement.
  • Assist with additional civic engagement initiatives as assigned.

Job Story

The Civic Engagement Internship is an integral part of the Student Engagement & Belonging team and the Shockers Vote! Coalition. This position will run through the 2026–2027 academic year and will be supervised directly by the Coordinator of Civic Engagement. The internship is designed to provide students with meaningful, hands‑on experience in voter and civic engagement through a combination of defined responsibilities, event planning, community engagement, and leadership opportunities

Job Summary

A student assistant will carry out administrative and technical tasks requested by a supervisor. Depending on the area the student assistant is employed in, they may assist and mentor other students or provide support throughout the campus in various forms.

Job Duties
  • Conduct classroom presentations on voter registration and civic responsibility.
  • Plan civic engagement workshops for students and student leaders.
  • Table at campus events to increase awareness of civic engagement opportunities.
  • Support civic engagement initiatives and civic holiday programming, including:
    • National Voter Registration Day festivities
    • Vote Early Day (October 28)
    • Election Day and Get Out the Vote activities
  • Plan, implement, and facilitate one civic engagement event during the semester.
  • Participate in community partner meetings and trainings as feasible.
  • Serve as a student representative on the Shockers Vote! Coalition.
  • Meet weekly with the Coordinator of Civic Engagement.
  • Assist with additional civic engagement initiatives as assigned.
Required Education

High School diploma or equivalent. Enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours at Wichita State University.

Terms of Appointment & Important Dates:

  • This position may require occasional evening and weekend hours.
  • The appointment period is August 2026 through May 2027.
  • The Civic Engagement Intern must remain in good conduct standing with the university throughout the duration of employment.
Physical Requirements

Ability to remain in a stationary position. Ability to operate a computer and other office equipment including but not limited to phone, printers, copiers, and calculators. Ability to communicate with others and accurately exchange information.
