Job summary

The Museum of Life and Science in Durham, NC is seeking a passionate Volunteer Coordinator to grow and strengthen our volunteer program. You will recruit, onboard, train, schedule, and manage volunteers while serving as a primary liaison across departments to ensure meaningful community engagement.

This full-time role requires excellent communication, strong customer service, and the ability to work evenings and weekends.

Qualifications

• Collaborative and creative work approach.
• Demonstrated ability to work with internal and external partners and possess strong interpersonal skills.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills, including face-to-face communication.
• Associates degree or higher secondary education.
• Proficient or higher mastery of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and database systems.
• 1+ years working in a role with customer service experience.
• Demonstrated exceptional customer service skills.
• Commitment to fostering a welcoming and accessible environment for all persons interacting with the Museum.
• Must be able to walk up to 3 miles a day and work some evenings/weekends.
• CPR/First aid certification.

Responsibilities

• Attract and retain engaged volunteers through regular communication, including a monthly volunteer newsletter.
• Attend volunteer recruitment events and identify new opportunities to expand community engagement.
• Coordinate and lead volunteer orientations, interviews, and background screenings.
• Match the interests, abilities, and availability of volunteers with departmental needs.
• Cultivate external relationships to maintain an engaged pool of volunteers.
• Develop and deliver volunteer training throughout the year, including summer camp orientations.
• Manage and track volunteer hours using the museum's volunteer system and prepare reports.
• Maintain volunteer recognition programs and work with the Development team on community support.
• Coordinate volunteer participation in museum events and ensure proper placement and support.
