Job description

Exempt/Non-Exempt:Non-Exempt / Part-time

Reporting to:Director of Visitor Services & Engagement

The Visitor Services Associate provides the best possible experience for all museum visitors. This position processes ticket sales, welcomes visitors, and informs all guests about upcoming programs and events. Candidates must present high standards of customer service and the ability to use a point of sales system. Be warm and energetic with a professional phone manner and capability to be patient and calm when dealing with challenging customer service issues. The position is on a part-time hourly basis and candidates must be available to work during weekends and occasionally on evenings for special events.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Welcoming and informing visitors about museum facilities and galleries.
  • Maintain the highest standards when working with visitors to ensure that all receive excellent customer service.
  • Accurately and efficiently handling cash and credit card transactions using a point-of-sale system.
  • Process sales for public programs and memberships.
  • Record visitor statistics as assigned.
  • Assist with the physical set‑up and breakdown of museum programs, events, and rentals.
  • Collect and accurately recording visitor data per museum’s Altru manual.
  • Answering the telephone in a friendly manner, efficiently routing calls, and answering general inquiries.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor.
  • Adhering to dress code and attendance policy.
  • Stay up to date with museum’s policies and procedures to inform visitors when needed.
  • Accommodating the needs of diverse visitors.
  • Assist with Membership sales.
  • Assisting with other duties and special projects as assigned by Manager.
Qualifications
  • Relevant experience in previous jobs, coursework, internships and volunteer work or a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a relevant subject area.
  • Access to email and a valid driver’s license.
  • A flexible schedule that includes weekends, being available a minimum of 4 days a week, including evenings.
  • Effective communication and problem solving skills.
  • Proficient with computers/Windows and cash handling.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish, English/Haitian Creole and/or American Sign Language preferred).
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
  • Lifting and transporting of moderately heavy objects, such as boxes, tables, chairs, etc. will be required.
  • Occasional stooping, kneeling, bending, squatting/crouching, pushing/pulling, and reaching above the shoulders and lifting of up to 50 lbs.
  • Being able to work programs/ events with mid-to-high noise levels such as performances, exhibition openings, festivals, etc.
  • Confidence working outdoors for events, exhibition openings, festivals, etc.
Hourly wages breakdown
  • There is a 3-month paid probationary period.
  • The base rate for all duties (including at off-site locations and during special events) is $16/hour.
  • A $25 per month traveling stipend is available after a 3-month paid probationary period.
  • Part-time employees are eligible for paid time off after one year of employment.
