Job summary

Duke University is seeking a part-time Duke Chapel Visitor Relations Assistant to greet and assist visitors, provide information, and support events. Responsibilities

  • Greet, direct, inform visitors and respond to questions.
  • Coordinate event setup and clean-up for services and concerts.
  • Conduct 15-minute tours of the sanctuary.
  • Monitor entrances during private events and enforce regulations.
  • Assist with brochures and information for visitors.
  • Respond to emergencies and coordinate with Duke Police as needed.

Occupational Summary

Duke Chapel Visitor Relations Assistant (part-time). This Part Time position serves as a Chapel representative and primary point of contact for visitors and the Duke community after business hours and on weekends and holidays. The individual will perform the following:

As a Visitor Relations Assistant, you will:

  • Greet, direct, inform, and responds to visitor questions
  • Communicate effectively as an ambassador of the Chapel and serve as a resource person for visitors and members of the Duke community
  • Research subject matter, describe points of interest, and respond to questions.
  • Ensure the nave, transepts, chancel, Memorial Chapel, and crypt are tidy and well stocked
  • Assist staff and student groups with set‑up and clean‑up for events, worship services, weddings, concerts, funerals, and rehearsals
  • Monitor the entrance to the nave during private events, if group has requested that no tourists be permitted inside
  • Maintain supply of brochures and other information for visitors
  • Conduct 15‑minute walking tours of the sanctuary
  • Compile information regarding visitors to the Chapel
  • Monitor visitor activities to ensure compliance with regulations and safety practices; notify visitors who are not in compliance
  • Monitor premises for incident prevention and signs of suspicious activity; apply judgment to issues of concern by notifying supervisor and or the Duke University Police Department as the situation warrant
  • Be available to respond to emergency situations such as fire or sudden illness of a visitor or event attendee
  • Close and lock, or unlock and open the Chapel building
  • Provide support for special projects, such as mailings, arts programs, etc.

Some lifting and carrying is required. Experience in or event coordination is strongly preferred. Familiarity with Duke and Durham is a plus.

What You’ll Bring
Education

Work requires a knowledge of basic grammar and mathematical principles normally acquired through a high school education.

Experience

Work requires three months of clerical or general office support experience to become familiar with activities involved in providing routine clerical support. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Anticipated Pay Range:

Duke University provides an annual base salary range for this position as USD $20.00 to USD $24.00. Duke University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position; candidate's work experience, education/training, and key skills; internal peer equity; as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
