Our mission is to ensure that all students are taught by excellent educators, in order to build a more just world where every student has a clear path to a fulfilling life.

The Vice President of Sales will build and lead Relay's first dedicated sales team, focused on driving new partner acquisition, increasing enrollment, and expanding Relay's reach and impact. Reporting to the Chief Growth Officer, this role will be responsible for designing and executing a scalable sales strategy that includes expanding into new geographies and customer segments, developing a repeatable sales process and playbook aligned to Relay's mission, building a mission-aligned sales culture, and ensuring high performance across the sales function.

Responsibilities and Duties

The essential responsibilities of this position, while not limited to the following, will include:

Sales Strategy & Execution (45%)

  • Develop and lead a scalable national and regional sales strategy that aligns with Relay's growth goals
  • Define sales targets, KPIs, compensation plans, and territory structures that support both top-line growth and ensures that outreach and offerings are designed to support Relay's mission in serving all students and school communities
  • Identify new market opportunities and design tailored go-to-market strategies for different state and district contexts
  • Use CRM tools and data analytics to forecast performance, optimize the pipeline, and guide strategic decision-making
  • Build internal visibility and accountability around sales performance through clear dashboards and reporting
  • Ensure compliance and alignment with public and philanthropic funding requirements in proposal development and sales processes

Team Leadership & Culture Building (35%)

  • Hire, manage, and coach a high-performing sales team including Account Executives, SDRs, Sales Operations, and Sales Enablement roles
  • Build a team culture grounded in mission alignment, equity, and consultative selling practices
  • Provide ongoing training, development, and performance management to ensure individual and team success
  • Establish systems for collaboration, learning, and knowledge sharing within the sales function and across departments

Cross-Functional Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement (20%)

  • Partner closely with Marketing to ensure coordinated outreach, aligned messaging, and lead quality across the funnel
  • Collaborate with the Partnerships and Public Affairs teams to navigate complex district and state-level opportunities
  • Serve as a key thought partner to the Chief Growth Officer and executive leadership on organizational growth strategy and resource allocation
  • Represent Relay with external stakeholders including district leaders, funders, and policy influencers to build strong, trust-based relationships

QUALIFICATIONS

First and foremost, the Vice President of Sales must share the Relay community's commitment to working together to improve student growth and achievement through phenomenal teacher preparation grounded in diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism. This includes providing teacher preparation programs that set novice teachers up to succeed in the classroom from day one; leadership programs that train new and veteran school and district leaders to best serve their school communities; and teacher-facing professional education that provides ongoing learning to educators. Additionally, for this position we're looking for candidates that possess a combination of the following skills:

  • Minimum of 8+ years of progressive experience in sales, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role managing multi-level sales teams
  • Proven track record of building and scaling high-performing sales teams in complex, consultative sales environments
  • Experience developing and executing sales strategies that drive new customer acquisition and revenue growth
  • Strong analytical and operational skills, with experience managing sales pipelines, forecasting, and CRM systems (e.g., Salesforce)
  • Skilled at designing compensation plans, sales operations infrastructure, and performance metrics
  • Exceptional team leadership skills with a track record of hiring, developing, and retaining talent
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate across departments (e.g., Marketing, Partnerships, Public Affairs) and influence executive stakeholders.
  • Strong alignment with Relay's mission and a passion for educational equity and expanding access to teacher preparation.
  • Ability to travel (10-15% travel time expected).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience selling to K–12 systems, higher education institutions, or mission-driven organizations
  • Familiarity with public sector procurement processes or state/district decision-making in education
  • Background in social impact, education, or nonprofit environments
  • Comfort navigating both entrepreneurial build phases and established operating environments
