Position Overview

The Senior Vice President, Development, is responsible for providing strategic leadership and direction across all fundraising, donor relations, and philanthropic service efforts. This senior executive will lead a high-performing team to engage donors, grow charitable assets, and strengthen community partnerships.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and execute comprehensive development strategies aligned with the organization’s mission.
  • Lead a multidisciplinary team focused on donor relations, planned giving, and major gifts.
  • Partner with the CEO and Board of Directors to cultivate high-impact philanthropic relationships.

Development & Donor Engagement

  • Oversee cultivation, stewardship, and retention efforts for donors at all levels.
  • Expand support through endowed funds, major gifts, donor-advised funds, and planned giving vehicles.
  • Maintain a portfolio of donors and stay actively engaged in frontline fundraising.

Team & Organizational Management

  • Supervise and mentor a team of seven development professionals.
  • Ensure operational excellence in donor engagement, gift processing, and fund administration.
  • Work cross-functionally with finance, programs, and knowledge teams to align fundraising with organizational priorities.

Community & External Relations

  • Serve as a visible leader in the community, representing the organization in donor, corporate, and civic settings.
  • Build and sustain relationships with individual, corporate, and institutional funders.
  • Promote inclusive philanthropy and community-based giving strategies.
  • Use donor data and giving trends to inform strategy and track progress.
  • Leverage technology to improve donor engagement and internal processes.
  • Champion innovative, equity-centered approaches to philanthropy.

Governance & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with legal and ethical standards in fundraising.
  • Maintain and enforce development policies and procedures in line with fund agreements and fiduciary responsibilities.
  • Provide regular reports and insights to Board and Development Committees.
  • Stay abreast of best practices and trends in philanthropic leadership and community foundations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred.
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in fundraising, donor relations, or philanthropic services.
  • Expertise in major gifts, donor stewardship, and planned giving.
  • Prior experience in a community foundation or with CAP (Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy) designation preferred.
  • Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills.
  • Strong analytical, strategic planning, and data interpretation skills.
  • Proficiency in Raiser’s Edge and Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
