Job description

The VP of Construction owns the full construction P&L across project delivery and field operations, driving the expansion of construction capabilities into new national markets. Key responsibilities include building a qualified subcontractor network, leading contract negotiations, overseeing department billing, and managing construction software systems. This role also mentors the office construction team, collaborates with Pre-Construction on project handoffs, and builds strong partnerships with superintendents to support field execution.

Designed as a two-phase leadership progression, the VP initially focuses on learning company operations and building trust with current leadership before stepping into full organizational oversight and joining the Executive Leadership Team.

Qualifications
Required
  • Minimum 7 years in construction, with demonstrated ownership of a project or business unit P&L not just budget input on someone else's P&L; forecasting abilities; prior working knowledge of construction financials and operating systems.
  • Background in MEP construction strongly preferred — piping, concrete, and the mechanical systems that make water features work
  • Subcontractor-side experience, ideally at a larger MEP subcontractor, is preferred over a purely general-contractor background — GPSI has found this builds sharper judgment on subcontractor quality and negotiation
  • Demonstrated experience building and negotiating with subcontractor networks, including sourcing and qualifying subcontractors in markets not previously served
  • Experience with billing oversight and construction management software at a department or
  • Demonstrated ability to lead through influence and partnership before formal authority is granted; genuinely comfortable operating as a peer first
  • Proven people-development ability: reads individuals accurately and builds specific plans to help them succeed, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach to mentorship
  • General contractor experience is a plus, though not weighted as heavily as subcontractor-side
  • Experience scaling a construction operation into new geographic markets
  • Water features, pools, fountains, or specialty/decorative construction exposure
  • Experience operating in a growth-phase company where systems are still being built
