Job description

The Associate Vice President, Operations serves as a senior leader responsible for overseeing construction operations across a designated geographic region, ensuring alignment with company strategy, operational excellence, and continued growth. This role leads and develops Operations Directors and their teams, driving consistency in project execution, scheduling, forecasting, safety, productivity, and quality across a portfolio ranging from approximately $100M to $250M in annual work. The AVP partners closely with leadership to implement strategic initiatives, improve operational processes, manage risk, support contract and pricing decisions, and enhance overall organizational performance. A key focus is building high-performing teams through coaching, mentoring, and leadership development while fostering a culture of accountability and continuous improvement. The position oversees the systems, tools, and infrastructure that support construction operations, ensuring standardized processes and efficient execution across all projects. While not directly responsible for P&L, the AVP plays a critical role in improving operational effectiveness, driving profitability through execution excellence, and positioning the business for long-term success. Projected 10% travel or less required.

Qualifications:
  • 5-7+ years of construction operations experience, with a strong foundation in directly managing construction activities. Early-career project management experience is highly valued, and candidates with MEP leadership or senior management experience within general contracting environments may also be considered.
  • Proven leadership experience, including at least 5 years leading, developing, and mentoring high-performing teams.
  • 10+ years of experience in mechanical construction, with 15-20 years of industry experience strongly preferred. Mechanical, HVAC, and plumbing construction should be core competencies.
  • Demonstrated success within the mechanical contracting industry, with a comprehensive understanding of project execution, operational processes, and field operations.
  • Experience leading large-scale construction projects, ideally with project values of $50M or greater, although equivalent complexity and scope will also be considered.
  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Business Administration, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong expertise in project scheduling and operational planning, with a track record of driving consistency, efficiency, and execution across multiple projects.
  • Experience leveraging productivity tracking and performance metrics to improve operational outcomes, workforce efficiency, and project performance.
  • A people-first leadership style, with a demonstrated commitment to coaching, mentoring, talent development, and fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
Plusses/nice to have (but not deal-breakers):
  • Experience utilizing Stratus or similar construction productivity tracking platforms to measure performance, drive operational efficiency, and support data-informed decision-making.
  • Lean, Six Sigma, and/or Black Belt certification preferred, with experience applying continuous improvement methodologies to enhance operational performance and process consistency.
  • Advanced proficiency with Primavera P6 scheduling software, including development, management, and optimization of complex project schedules for large-scale construction programs.
