MKH Search is assisting a mid-size commercial contractor in Washington, DC metro area to find a VP of Finance. This executive role combines hands-on accounting ownership with strategic leadership, reporting to the President and ownership.

The candidate will oversee close processes, job-cost accounting, cash management, and ERP transitions, while leading a small team and partnering with operations on profitability reviews.

Qualifications

• Strong technical accounting background with exposure to construction projects.

• Hands-on accounting and financial reporting responsibilities beyond management.
• CPA or public accounting background is a plus but not required.

Responsibilities

• Own monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes with accurate reporting.
• Oversee job-cost accounting, WIP schedules, and revenue recognition.
• Manage cash, banking relationships, and internal controls.
• Participate in ERP transition and system improvements.
• Lead budgeting, variance analysis, and KPI development.
• Provide actionable financial insights to President and ownership.
• Support strategic decisions with financial analysis and scenario planning.

Company Overview

Position Overview

The VP Finance is the senior accounting and finance leader, reporting to the President. The role combines hands-on Controller ownership with a broader leadership and business-partnering remit, split between core accounting and finance leadership, and higher-level planning, risk, and decision support for the President and ownership.

What the Role Involves

Core Accounting and Finance

• Ownership of monthly, quarterly, and annual close, and accurate internal financial reporting
• Job-cost accounting, WIP schedules, and revenue recognition
• Cash management, banking relationships, and internal controls
• Involvement in an active ERP transition

Strategic and Business Partnering

• Producing clear management reporting that explains performance, cash position, risk, and key issues directly to the President and ownership
• Leading annual budgeting and variance analysis, with proportionate forecasting and KPI development
• Partnering with operations on project profitability reviews, improving the quality and usefulness of financial information across the business
• Translating detailed financial data into practical insight that supports senior-level decision making
• Contributing financial analysis and judgment to important business decisions as they arise
• Leading and developing a small accounting team, including addressing performance issues directly

Candidate Profile

• Strong technical accounting background; construction experience required
• Comfortable working hands-on in detailed accounting, not just managing through others
• Experience leading a small team
• CPA or public accounting background a plus but not required
