Through Felix, our client in distribution is currently hiring for the VP of Finance. They are a privately held and growing organization that has locations in the USA and Canada.
About the Role
The VP of Finance will play a key role in overseeing the financial operations of the company, managing a team of finance professionals, and providing critical insights to drive business decisions. The role reports directly to the Chief Operating Officer (COO) and will work closely with other departments to ensure financial performance aligns with business goals. We are looking for this individual to bring a combination of technical expertise, leadership experience, and a deep understanding of the import/export industry, including warehousing and distribution. A background in mergers and acquisitions (M&A) is highly beneficial for this role.
Responsibilities
Financial Leadership & Strategic Oversight:
- Lead and manage the finance department, guiding a team of 7 direct reports, ensuring professional growth, operational effectiveness, and a high level of team engagement.
- Partner closely with the Chief Operating Officer (COO) and senior leadership team to develop and execute the company’s long-term financial strategy and objectives.
- Provide senior-level financial advice, making actionable recommendations for optimizing operational performance, managing financial risks, and ensuring sustainable growth.
- Serve as a key advisor to business units, providing financial analysis and insights that support decisions on new business initiatives, capital expenditures, and process improvements.
- Oversee the preparation and review of timely and accurate financial reports, including monthly/quarterly financial statements, management reports, and annual budgets.
- Manage and refine budgeting, forecasting, and long-term planning processes, ensuring all financial goals align with corporate objectives and operational realities.
- Perform detailed financial analysis to monitor performance against budget, identify key trends, and provide actionable insights that drive business performance improvements.
- Monitor financial Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) across multiple departments (e.g., cost per unit, shipping efficiency, inventory turnover) and advise leadership on corrective actions if necessary.
Regulatory Compliance & Reporting:
- Ensure full compliance with local, state, and international tax laws, including import/export regulations, financial reporting standards (IFRS or GAAP), and industry-specific regulations impacting warehousing and distribution operations.
- Oversee audits and maintain control over financial systems, ensuring that internal processes meet audit standards and facilitate smooth auditing procedures.
- Collaborate with legal, tax, and regulatory advisors to stay current with changes in laws, tariffs, and global trade compliance, advising senior leadership on potential risks or opportunities.
Cash Flow, Capital, and Risk Management:
- Manage the company’s cash flow, ensuring liquidity to meet day-to-day operational needs, as well as capital for growth initiatives.
- Oversee working capital management and ensure effective cash management strategies are in place to optimize cash flow across the supply chain.
- Lead financial risk assessments, mitigating risk associated with international trade, exchange rate fluctuations, customs, warehousing, and distribution challenges.
- Recommend strategies to optimize financial structure, capital financing, and debt management, ensuring both short-term needs and long-term financial stability.
Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A):
- Lead or support the financial due diligence process in mergers, acquisitions, and strategic partnerships, providing insights on valuation, risks, and potential synergies.
- Collaborate with legal, operational, and senior management teams to evaluate target companies, ensuring seamless integration of financial operations.
- Provide guidance on structuring deals and post-acquisition financial integration processes.
Process Improvement & Financial Systems Optimization:
- Continuously review and refine financial systems, processes, and controls to improve efficiency and accuracy, enabling better decision-making at all levels.
- Lead the implementation and integration of new financial technologies and tools, such as ERP or business intelligence platforms, to streamline reporting, analysis, and forecasting.
- Ensure the scalability of financial systems and processes as the company continues to grow.
Team Management and Development:
- Manage and develop the finance team by fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and professional growth.
- Conduct regular performance reviews, provide constructive feedback, and ensure the team is properly trained in both technical accounting functions and strategic business needs.
- Lead recruitment efforts to expand and strengthen the team, ensuring a high level of performance and expertise.
- Work closely with the operations, logistics, procurement, and sales teams to ensure that financial decisions align with day-to-day operations and strategic objectives.
- Provide financial insights and analysis on key operational initiatives, such as supply chain optimization, cost reduction strategies, and pricing decisions.
Qualifications
Required Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in business, finance or accounting; MBA an asset. A C.A or C.P.A designation is mandatory.
- Minimum of 7-10 years of progressive experience in financial management, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
- Extensive experience in financial accounting, analysis, reporting, and budgeting in a fast-paced, international environment.
- Proven expertise in managing import/export finance operations, particularly in logistics, warehousing, distribution, and supply chain finance.
- Strong experience in mergers and acquisitions, including financial due diligence, deal structuring, and post-acquisition integration.
- Advanced technical proficiency in financial management software, ERP systems, and financial modeling tools (e.g., Excel, Power BI, SAP).
- In-depth knowledge of international financial regulations and standards, including tariffs, customs compliance, and cross-border taxation.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to influence and communicate effectively with both senior executives and operational teams.
- Strategic thinking with strong business acumen and the ability to drive change and innovation within the finance function.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with international financial transactions, foreign currency risk management, and financial structuring for global trade.
- Familiarity with financial software implementations, particularly in ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle).
- Knowledge of warehousing and distribution operations, including cost management and optimization strategies.
