National Veterinary Associates offers an externship for veterinary students. This program provides hands-on experience in patient care, including physical exams and diagnostics, in a supportive environment. Candidates are encouraged to participate regardless of their class year, with opportunities for mentorship and stipend support.
An externship experience at an NVA hospital offers students a unique opportunity to understand the day-to-day operations of the practice and gain valuable hands-on clinical experience. Although each NVA hospital is unique, they share common features: a supportive environment, a commitment to excellent medicine, and a focus on providing exceptional service to animals and their owners.
Students will work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry, observing or assisting with surgical procedures, and medical management of patients. This externship also provides an opportunity to develop communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
Most externship durations at Newport Animal Hospital range from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students, regardless of their class year, are encouraged to participate.
Veterinary students in the clinical portion of their education may be eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. Click HERE to view stipend amounts and HERE for details on the stipend program.
