National Veterinary Associates offers a unique externship program allowing veterinary students to gain hands-on clinical experience at their hospitals. Students will work closely with veterinarians, enhancing their skills in patient care while receiving mentorship in a supportive environment. This externship not only includes practical experience but also opportunities for professional development in veterinary medicine.
An externship experience at an NVA hospital provides students with a unique opportunity to understand the daily operations of the practice and gain valuable hands-on clinical experience. While each NVA hospital is unique, they share common features: a supportive environment, a commitment to excellent medicine, and a dedication to providing exceptional service to animals and their owners.
Students will work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry services, observing or assisting with surgical procedures, and managing medical cases. Additionally, externs will have opportunities to enhance their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
Most externship durations at Abbott Valley Veterinary Center range from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students, regardless of their class year, are encouraged to participate in NVA externships.
Veterinary students in the clinical phase of their education may be eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. Click HERE to view the stipend amounts and HERE for details on the stipend program.
