Job description

An externship experience at an NVA hospital provides students with a unique opportunity to understand the daily operations of a veterinary practice and gain valuable hands-on clinical experience. While each NVA hospital is unique, common qualities include a supportive environment, a commitment to excellent medicine, and a focus on providing exceptional service to animals and their owners.

Parkersburg Veterinary Hospital is a busy five-doctor practice located in western West Virginia. We emphasize a team approach, encouraging case discussions among staff, which externs are welcome to participate in. During the externship, based on your educational level, you can expect to observe doctors during appointments, perform physical exams, assist in creating diagnostic and treatment plans, and communicate with clients about treatments. Opportunities may also include assisting in surgeries and performing minor procedures such as spays and neuters independently. Our goal is to provide as much real-world experience as possible under the guidance of our experienced veterinary staff, enhancing your education through hands-on learning.

Externships typically last from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. These externships are designed for third and fourth-year veterinary students.

Veterinary students in the clinical portion of their education may be eligible for a travel and living expense stipend. Click HERE to view the stipend amounts and HERE for more details on the program.
