National Veterinary Associates (NVA) offers an externship for veterinary students, providing a unique opportunity to gain hands-on clinical experience in a supportive environment. Externs will work closely with veterinarians, enhancing their skills through various responsibilities in caring for animals and their owners.
An externship experience at an NVA hospital provides students with a unique opportunity to understand the day-to-day operations of the practice and gain valuable hands-on clinical experience. Although each NVA hospital is unique, they share common qualities: a supportive environment, a commitment to excellent medicine, and a focus on providing exceptional service to animals and their owners.
Students will work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry services, observing or assisting with surgical procedures, and medical management of patients. Additionally, externs will have opportunities to develop their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
Externship durations typically range from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students, regardless of class year, are encouraged to participate in NVA externships.
Veterinary students in the clinical portion of their education may be eligible for a travel and living expense stipend. Click HERE to view the stipend amounts and HERE for more details on the program.
