Job summary

Petco Veterinary Hospital in Metairie, LA is seeking a Veterinary Assistant to provide excellent medical care and outstanding customer service for Vetco Total Care patients. The role includes assisting veterinarians, restraining patients, handling samples and medications, and helping with surgeries and anesthesia.

Ideal candidates have at least 1 year in a veterinary setting, strong communication, and teamwork skills.

Qualifications

Preferred to have at least 1-year previous experience working in veterinary practice.
Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Must be compassionate and sympathetic, and be able to maintain a professional attitude and demeanor.
Must have telephone and computer skills.

Responsibilities

Greet clients and patients arriving for appointments and escort them into an exam room; record weights and vital signs in the EMR.
Assist doctors with appointments, surgery, dentistry, and euthanasia under supervision.
Perform patient restraint, process laboratory samples, and handle medications as directed.
Schedule appointments, provide client education, relay test results, and update records.
Prepare patients for procedures and assist in anesthesia; monitor vital signs during anesthesia and recovery.
Help with in-hospital treatments and IV fluids; keep patients clean, fed, and comfortable.
Train new staff and support a clean, well-maintained hospital environment.
