Job summary

Animal Emergency and Specialty Hospital in Grand Rapids is hiring a Veterinary Assistant for ER support. The role includes assisting doctors, anesthesia monitoring, surgeries prep, and client communication in a bustling 24/7 facility.

Qualified candidates will have veterinary assistant experience, a compassionate bedside manner, and fluent English. This position offers both part-time and full-time schedules with evening and night shifts, weekends, and holidays as required.

Qualifications

  • Experience working as a Veterinary Assistant in a fast-paced clinical setting.
  • Ability to assist veterinarians during exams and procedures with accuracy.
  • Excellent communication with clients and team members is required.
  • Willingness to collaborate in a supportive, drama-free workplace.

Responsibilities

  • Assist veterinarians during exams, treatments and procedures.
  • Perform technical tasks including IVC placement, meds admin, radiology and anesthesia monitoring.
  • Monitor anesthesia with ECG, SpO2, EtCO2 and NIBP.
  • Provide pre- and post-surgical care and assist with recovery.
  • Handle and process lab samples for local/offsite labs.
  • Document patient histories and care in EzyVet/SmartFlow.
  • Communicate treatment plans, estimates, and discharge instructions to clients.
  • Educate clients on conditions, care plans and follow-up.
  • Support cleanliness, safety protocols, and inventory management.

Veterinary Assistant, Emergency

Location: Grand Rapids, MI

Schedule: Part Time & Full Time Available | FT Hours Are 3 Twelve Hour Shifts Per Week - Evening/Mid-Shift Availability Required | Shift Bid Every 6 Months | Rotating Weekends & 3/6 Holidays

Compensation: $17-25 per hour, depending on experience and skillset | $3/hour shift differential for the hours worked between 11pm-7am

In Your Day-To-Day, You Will
  • Assist veterinarians during exams, treatments and procedures.
  • Perform technical tasks; IVC placement, medication administration, radiology, anesthesia monitoring, patient monitoring, etc.
  • Monitor anesthesia using ECG, SpO2, EtCO2, and NIBP.
  • Provide pre- and post-surgical care and assist with surgical prep and recovery for patients.
  • Handle and process laboratory samples for submission to local and offsite labs.
  • Accurately obtain and relay detailed patient histories.
  • Document records, treatment and diagnostics into systems (EzyVet and SmartFlow).
  • Communicate effectively with clients on treatment plans, estimates, and discharge instructions including callbacks and updates.
  • Educate and communicate with clients regarding their pet's condition, treatment plans, review of estimates, and follow-up care.
  • Support hospital cleanliness, safety protocols and inventory management.
  • Additional duties as requested by hospital leadership.
