Job Opportunity: Mechanic - Vehicle/Equipment Repair Technician II (VERT II) at NCDOT

This position offers full State Benefits, competitive salaries, and numerous career development opportunities.

Salary Grade: NC08 / Salary Range: $37,782.00 - $66,120.00. The maximum hiring rate is $57,177, based on education and experience.

This extended posting, open through May 30, 2025, is for VERT II positions in Division 5, Wake County. Multiple vacancies will be filled, and applicants need only apply once to be considered for all vacancies during this period. If interested in multiple counties, separate applications are required. These are permanent positions with full benefits, including health insurance, retirement, and leave entitlements.

Responsibilities:
  • Perform skilled repair on small engines, automotive, and heavy equipment.
  • Service, inspect, diagnose, rebuild, and repair various mechanical systems for gasoline, diesel, and alternative engines.
  • Use diagnostic instruments and software for complex analysis.
  • Conduct parts and systems failure analysis, calibration, and adjustments.
  • Perform electrical, suspension, brake repairs, and maintain specialized equipment.
  • Work may require consultation with senior technicians or supervisors.
  • Work in adverse weather conditions, including extended hours, weekends, and holidays.
Qualifications:

Applicants must demonstrate experience in:

  • Preventive maintenance on trucks and heavy equipment.
  • Diagnostics and repair of electrical systems.
  • Hydraulic system repairs, including component replacement and hoses.
Additional Requirements:
  • Ability to repair and maintain equipment, diagnose problems, and interpret OEM manuals and schematics.
  • Physical ability to lift heavy objects and work in indoor/outdoor environments.
  • Must furnish a complete set of mechanic tools.
  • Legal operation of CDL-required equipment within 360 days of hire, with specific licensing requirements.
  • Pre-employment drug testing and background checks are mandatory.

Offer of employment is contingent upon successful completion of a post-offer evaluation.

Minimum education: High school diploma or GED plus two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination. Certification by the EPA as a Type I, II, III, or Universal technician may be required.
