Responsibilities

  • Inspect facilities and vehicles for cleanliness, safety, and appearance.
  • Keep floors, windows, and seats clean.
  • Fuel and service vehicles; check oil, water, and transmission fluid.
  • Maintain grounds around bus shelters and facilities.
  • Prepare records and reports as required.
  • Operate buses and light equipment as needed.
  • Assist in maintenance tasks as instructed.

Job Summary:

Performs semi-skilled maintenance work on vehicles and facilities; maintains grounds and equipment around bus shelters and various TACC facilities; and performs related work as required. This position is a Department of Transportation Safety Sensitive position and is subject to mandatory, random drug and alcohol testing pursuant to Federal regulations and policies.

Qualification Requirements:

Essential Functions:

An employee in this class may be called upon to do any or all of the following: (These examples do not include all of the tasks which the employee may be expected to perform.)

  • Inspects physical facilities and vehicles for such factors as cleanliness, safety, and appearance.
  • Keeps interior/exterior floors, windows, and seats of vehicles clean.
  • Fuels and services vehicles (checks oil, water, and transmission fluid levels).
  • Probe and change fare boxes.
  • Performs grounds maintenance such as lawn mowing, snow removal, and pulling weeds.
  • Maintains progress sheets and daily work orders.
  • Prepares records and reports as required.
  • Places bus stop signs and performs maintenance in and around bus shelters.
  • Operate buses of various sizes, a truck and/or light equipment.
  • May purchase supplies and materials.
  • Clean building facility's including but not limited to janitorial duties, painting, and minor building maintenance.
  • Assists in various other maintenance tasks through oral or written instructions.

Physical Requirements:

Strength & Lifting

  • Ability to lift/carry 50-75 lbs regularly (parts, tools, batteries, tires).
  • Occasional lifting of heavier items (100+ lbs) with assistance or mechanical aid.
  • Pushing/pulling force for moving equipment, jacks, and parts carts.

Mobility & Dexterity

  • Frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling.
  • Climbing on/into vehicles (buses, vans) and using ladders or platforms.
  • Standing/walking for most of the shift (often 8+ hours) on hard surfaces (concrete shop floors)

Strength/Stamina

  • Physical stamina for sustained physical labor throughout a full shift
  • Grip strength for hand tools, wrenches, and power equipment

Sensory

  • Vision adequate for close, detailed work (reading gauges, inspecting parts)
  • Hearing sufficient to diagnose issues (unusual engine/mechanical sounds) and for safety communication in a noisy shop environment

Working Conditions:

  • Indoor shop/garage setting, though may include outdoor work
  • Exposure to noise (pneumatic tools, engines, compressors)
  • Exposure to grease, oil, solvents, exhaust fumes, and other automotive chemicals
  • Exposure to extreme temperatures depending on season and whether working in bays with open doors or outdoors

Schedule

  • Shift work, including evenings, nights, and holidays
  • On-call or emergency road-call duty may be required for breakdowns during service hours
  • Overtime is common, particularly for fleet readiness before service periods

Physical Hazards

  • Risk of cuts, burns, pinches, and strains from tools and heavy components
  • Exposure to hazardous materials (requires PPE: gloves, safety glasses, steel-toed boots, hearing protection)
  • Working near moving vehicles and other mechanics/utility in a shared shop space

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Ability to acquire a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Air Brake/Passenger endorsements within 60 days.
  • One (1) year of experience in janitorial, maintenance, and/or utility work.
  • Must be able to obtain 1 year DOT medical card
  • Must be able to successfully pass DOT FTA Pre-Employment Drug Test
