Job summary

City-of-Kenosh is seeking a skilled maintenance technician to perform welding, fabrication, diagnostics and repair work on City vehicles, buses, trucks and streetcars. You will handle preventative maintenance, record-keeping, and respond to service calls in adverse conditions.

Responsibilities include diagnosing hydraulics, electrical systems and computer‑controlled diagnostics, with potential second/third shift and forklift operation. CDL may be required within department guidelines.

Qualifications

• Requires knowledge of automotive gas, diesel systems, electrical trouble‑shooting.
• Basic fluid power theory and operation in mobile and stationary systems.
• Skilled in using common shop tools and equipment; safe work practices.

Responsibilities

• Receive and complete work orders; repair vehicles/equipment; record parts, time and work.
• Diagnose and repair hydraulic systems, from simple to complex.
• Troubleshoot and repair air conditioning systems as required.
• Weld and fabricate on vehicles/equipment and facilities as needed.
• Diagnose computer-controlled systems using laptop/scanner; perform tests after repair.
• Perform preventative maintenance per manufacturer recommendations.
• Maintain inventory and parts records; assist in snow/ice control activities.
• May work 2nd or 3rd shift regularly; operate a forklift.

Job description

Under general supervision of the mechanic supervisor, performs skilled maintenance and repair work on City vehicles, light /heavy trucks, buses, streetcars, off-road equipment, turf tractors and various contractor's equipment. Incumbent also performs welding and fabricating as needed, and performs diagnostic testing on equipment and vehicles. Work is reviewed through conference and written reports for adherence to established policies and procedures. Performs other work as requested or assigned.

This position will remain open until the needs of the City have been met.

• Receives and completes work orders and repairs vehicles and equipment as assigned; records parts used, work completed and time spent on assignments.
• Diagnosis problems and performs repairs to simple and complex hydraulic systems in all City equipment.
• Performs troubleshooting, maintenance and repairs to air conditioning systems as required.
• Performs welding and fabricating on vehicles, equipment and facilities as needed.
• Performs complex troubleshooting and repairs on a wide range of equipment; diagnoses equipment and vehicle computer controlled systems with the use of a laptop computer or scanner.
• Performs preventative maintenance in accordance with the equipment manufactures recommendations.
• Repairs light and heavy, on-road and off-road equipment.
• Tests vehicles and equipment after repair; ensures the cleaning and refueling of vehicles.
• Responds to on/off road service calls and performs repairs as necessary
• Maintains inventory and records, orders parts for broken equipment, stocks parts and supplies.
• Assists in snow and ice control activities.
• May be required to work 2nd or 3rd shift on a regular basis.
• Operates a fork lift for various tasks.
• Performs other related duties as required.

Required Education, Training and Experience:

• High school diploma or GED;
• Supplemented by three (3) years of experience in automotive or mechanical maintenance and repair work;
• Or, an equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.

Required Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:

• Knowledge of automotive gas, diesel mechanical, electronic, computer controlled systems, and electrical troubleshooting, repair and maintenance.
• Basic knowledge of fluid power theory, diagnosis and operation in mobile and stationary systems.
• Skilled in the use of shop tools and equipment.
• Knowledge of safe work practices.
• Ability to diagnose and perform routine and complex maintenance and repair on automobiles, trucks, buses, electric street cars, emergency vehicles and heavy equipment.
• Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records.
• Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
• Ability to work effectively and reasonably well with other employees and the general public.
• Ability to handle reasonably necessary stress.

Physical Requirements:

• Task involves the continuous operation of hand and power tools and the full range of shop equipment to very exacting tolerances, calling for full coordination of sensory and manipulative ability in order to achieve full production to acceptable standards.
• Task may involve occasional heavy lifting or moving, but the emphasis is placed upon the coordination and manipulation skills.

Additional Requirements:

Incumbent may be given a specific period of time in which to obtain the proper endorsement(s) at the discretion of the department.
• Good driving record.
• May be required to provide a personal vehicle for use on the job.
