Position Title: Utility Service Worker (Meter Reader)

Division: Meter Reading

Salary: $30,975.19

Overview

This position is responsible for assisting in the reading of water utility meters and minor maintenance of them; disconnecting and reconnection of water accounts.

Responsibilities
  1. Operate a vehicle along an assigned route to read and record water usage data using our AMI cellular system or manually.
  2. Locate malfunctioning meters; troubleshoot and make minor repairs.
  3. Replace and repair meter lids and boxes.
  4. Change out endpoints/antennas and meters.
  5. Install water meters for existing accounts where meters have been pulled in the past.
  6. Turn off and lock meters for nonpayment; reconnect them once paid.
  7. Connect water service for new customers.
  8. Re-read and quality check meters as assigned.
  9. Recheck and visit with customers, contractors regarding meter issues and high bills.
  10. Collect meter data using cell phone or tablet.
  11. Maintain assigned vehicle and equipment.
  12. Issue door tags and messages from Customer Service to customers.
  13. Perform other related duties.
Qualifications
  1. Knowledge of department safety policies and procedures.
  2. Knowledge of utility meter operations and maintenance principles.
  3. Knowledge of area streets and roads.
  4. Knowledge of vehicle maintenance principles.
  5. Skill in the use of handheld computers and job-related software.
  6. Skill in the operation of assigned vehicles and equipment.
  7. Skill in the use of hand and power tools.
  8. Skill in problem solving.
  9. Skill in interpersonal relations.
  10. Skills in oral and written communication.
  11. Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations.
  12. Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  13. Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
