Arizona State University is seeking a Skilled Crafts and Trade Assistant 3 Non-Exempt to support steam infrastructure, plumbing, and utility piping systems at the Tempe campus and other ASU locations as needed.

The role requires a high school diploma with 3 years of plumbing/mechanical-pipefitting experience or an equivalent combination of education and training. The schedule is Monday–Friday, 8:00am–5:00pm, with a salary of $23.73/hr and full ASU benefits.

Qualifications

  • Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma and 3 years of related experience or equivalent combination of experience/training.
  • Desired qualifications include 3 years plumbing/mechanical-pipefitting experience or a 4-year federally approved technical training program in plumbing.
  • Experience studying plans, drawings, specs, and work orders; ASME/ASTM standards; using TMS for tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Install, repair, and maintain plumbing and piping systems, including complex, precision work.
  • Locate, repair, replace malfunctioning parts with hand and power tools.
  • Inspect components; solder/braze metals, piping, and pressure vessels.
  • Work with drawings and specifications; install sprinkler systems and water/ drain lines.
  • Operate and coordinate tasks using electronic work order systems (TMS).
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Description

Facilities Development and Management, Facilities Management, Knowledge Enterprise (Research) seeks a Utility Piping Specialist to assist with steam infrastructure, in addition to the installation, repair, and maintenance of plumbing systems, including performing complex and precision work related to utility piping systems.

This position is located at the Tempe campus but will require working at other ASU campus locations based on program need.

This position will remain open until filled.

Essential Duties
  • Install, repair, and maintain plumbing systems, including performing complex and precision work related to utility piping systems.
  • Locate, repair, and replace malfunctioning parts using hand tools (e.g. screwdrivers, pliers, crescent wrenches, and piping wrenches) and power tools (e.g. drills, hand held drain cleaning machines).
  • Inspect mechanical system components and use soldering and brazing tools to perform precision techniques in the design, layout, fabrication, joining, and repair of metals, piping, and pressure vessels.
  • Work with drawings and specifications.
  • Install and maintain sprinkler systems.
  • Install and repair water lines and drain lines.
  • Prioritize work based on critical needs assessment.
  • Assist other trades as needed.
  • Use ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
  • Use electronic work order systems to coordinate assigned tasks (TMS)
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Monday – Friday, 8:00am- 5:00pm

Salary Range

$23.73 per hour. ASU offers a comprehensive benefits package with the State of Arizona.

Desired Qualifications

Must have three years of plumbing and/or mechanical-pipefitting systems experience; OR, Completion of a four year federally approved technical training program in plumbing; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Experience in

  • Studying plans, drawings, specifications, and work orders to determine work requirements and sequence of repairs or replacement as required.
  • Applying welding standards as defined by current trade practice. Examples include the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) or American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards.
  • Using electronic work order systems (TMS) to track and manage maintenance tasks
Knowledge Of
  • The mechanical operation of equipment such as pumps, boilers, cooling towers and chillers.
  • The tools, equipment and materials common to the plumbing and welding trades.
  • Applicable codes.
  • The installation, repair, and maintenance of plumbing and utility piping systems.
  • The design, fabrication, joining and repair of metals, piping, equipment and structures.
Working Environment
  • Perform work in dirty environments with inadequate lighting, extreme noise, extreme temperatures, confined spaces (e.g. tunnels, man holes, and vaults), restricted movement and hazardous materials.
  • Wear personal protective equipment (e.g. safety glasses, face shield, negative pressure respirator, gloves, and hearing protection). Use of PPE may require medical clearance prior to use.
  • Climb ladders and work off ladders using hand and power tools to repair plumbing and drainage systems.
  • Work off boom or crane trucks to make repairs above six feet.
  • Travel throughout campus to various research buildings as needed.
  • Lift and carry objects up to 50 lbs.
  • Drive University vehicle/cart.
