Arizona State University is seeking HVAC Technicians to perform preventive maintenance, repairs, and diagnostics on heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems at the Tempe campus.

Positions include Technician I and II, with daytime hours Monday–Friday, and on-call responsibilities. The role requires safety compliance, ability to interpret schematics, and a commitment to professional development within ASU Facilities Development and Management.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent with 2 years HVAC experience or an equivalent combination of training/experience.
• Must obtain CFC certification within 6 months of hire.
• EPA Universal CFC Certification for Technician II is preferred.
• Ability to read and interpret HVAC schematics and troubleshooting guides.

Responsibilities

• Perform preventive maintenance on HVAC systems and components (filters, belts, coils).
• Diagnose equipment issues and perform repairs on chillers, boilers, air handlers, and controls.
• Interpret schematics and wiring diagrams; document work and maintain safety records.
• Support on-call duties and provide emergency response as needed.
• Mentor junior technicians and maintain accurate service logs.

Job Description:

Facilities Management (Research)- Tempe campus, seeks HVAC Technicians to perform preventive maintenance, repair, overhaul and maintain heating, ventilating, air conditioning (HVAC) and refrigeration systems.

This position is based on the Tempe campus but will require working at other campus locations based on program need.

This position will remain open until filled.

Essential Duties:

HVAC Technician I

• Perform preventive maintenance tasks (e.g., filter and belt replacement)
• Perform equipment diagnostics and repairs
• Interpret HVAC schematics and wiring diagrams
• Document work performed and ensure compliance with safety procedures
• Support on-call duties and emergency response
• Work under the guidance of senior staff

HVAC Technician II

• Perform repairs on chillers, boilers, air handlers, compressors, and controls
• Conduct preventive maintenance, system diagnostics, and performance tests
• Support on-call duties and emergency response
• Train and mentor junior technicians as needed
• Maintain accurate service logs and reports

DAYS AND SCHEDULE

Monday – Friday, 6:00am – 2:30 pm

SALARY RANGES

HVAC Technician I: $26.00- 30.00 per hour. ASU offers a comprehensive benefits package with the State of Arizona.

HVAC Technician II: $30.01- 34.00 per hour. ASU offers a comprehensive benefits package with the State of Arizona

Desired Qualifications:

HVAC Technician I

• Basic HVAC knowledge: air handlers, VAVs, exhaust systems, DX units
• Competency with hand tools and basic diagnostic equipment
• Ability to work safely with refrigerants and tools
• 0-2 years HVAC or facilities experience
• Must obtain CFC certification within 6 months

HVAC Technician II

• Strong understanding of HVAC systems and controls
• Ability to read and interpret complex schematics and as-builts
• Proficiency in troubleshooting and using digital instrumentation
• Familiarity with chilled water systems, DX equipment, and airflow mechanics
• 3–6 years of HVAC experience
• EPA Universal CFC Certification
• Associate degree or equivalent technical experience toward the required experience

Working Environment:

• Extensive use of power tools (e.g. drills, generators, saws, lifts, vacuum equipment).
• Climb ladders, ladder wells, and stairs.
• Work off ladders using hand tools and power tools to include working off lift platforms and boom trucks at heights above six feet.
• Use of moving, and rigging equipment to safely move, transfer, or relocate heavy equipment.
• Operate refrigeration recovery equipment in compliance with EPA guidelines.
• Use of CFC refrigerant.
• Work in adverse working conditions such as confined spaces (e.g. tunnels, man holes, vaults), dirty areas, low lighting, and extreme temperatures.
• Stoop, bend, and reach.
• Walk throughout campus.
• Lift up to 50 pounds.
• May be exposed to hazardous and dangerous materials, tools, and equipment which will require safety precautions and/or specific process to be followed.

Ability to obtain Chlorofluorocarbon Certification within six months of employment date.

Candidates must successfully complete a pre-employment respiratory clearance questionnaire and respirator fit test as a condition of employment. A baseline audiogram will also be completed within the first month of employment.

This position requires working a rotating on-call/stand‑by schedule and may be called in for emergency response including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Driving Requirement:

This position may require driving. Employee must possess a valid US Driver’s license of the appropriate class and required endorsements throughout employment.
