Kalamazoo Valley is looking for a Utility Maintenance Specialist for second shift. Individuals in this position provide maintenance and limited repair of HVAC, electrical, plumbing and mechanical systems. They may also serve as emergency area leaders. Utility Maintenance Specialists are an important part of our team, ensuring that faculty, staff and students have safe, well-maintained and well-functioning facilities in which to learn and work.
Specific Duties Include, But Are Not Limited To
- Monitor assigned areas to ensure spaces and equipment are safe, welcoming and well-maintained.
- Conduct preventative maintenance and assist with repairs to HVAC, lighting, electrical and other building systems and perform routine diagnostics to resolve difficulties.
- Maintain chemical treatment for water systems, such as cooling towers, boilers, ice melt and more.
- Utilize building controls systems to monitor building environments and to troubleshoot equipment failures.
- Assist in maintaining facilities by: performing carpentry [e.g., repairing and finishing walls, installing doors and hardware, windows, joint sealing, hanging items on walls, etc.]; performing basic plumbing duties [e.g., installing and repairing faucets, toilets, water supply lines, leaky pipes, etc.]; performing minor electrical duties [e.g., changing lighting ballasts, replacing receptacles and switches, etc.].
- Assist other departments as needed [e.g., custodial units in upkeep of spaces, grounds unit with landscaping/snow removal, materials unit with shipping/receiving/inventory, fork lift operation, building security, etc.].
- Participate in emergency team efforts [e.g., maintaining and operating fire/weather monitoring equipment, ensuring safe and secure work spaces, contributing to search teams, etc.].
Also required
- Familiarity with building automation and computer-based work request system.
- Knowledge of basic safety practices followed in maintenance work.
- Knowledge of basic carpentry, electricity, plumbing, painting and heating and air conditioning.
- Skill in troubleshooting, performing and resolving maintenance repairs.
- Skill in performing building and grounds maintenance work.
- Skill in using and operating hand and electrical tools.
Other notes
- This position may be called in after hours, on rotation with other maintenance staff.
Minimum Qualifications
- Education equivalent to a high school diploma is required.
- Experience equivalent to two years experience in building maintenance and/or related work is required.
- EPA Universal Refrigerant certification, Pesticide Applicator and CPR certificates are required (or the ability to obtain upon employment).
Preferred Qualifications And Experience
Physical Demands
Must be able to lift 50 - 75 pounds.
Must be able to climb ladders.
