Job summary

The City of Norfolk's Department of Utilities is seeking qualified candidates for an Engineering Technician I, Utility Locator in our Field Engineering Division. Locates and marks underground utilities and manages utility location request records. Updates and completes city documents, maps and plats.

Provides administrative assistance and performs related duties. Essential functions include locating utilities, managing records, color coding and clerical duties, with physical requirements such as

Qualifications

• Locates underground utilities by marking lines and mains with locating equipment and drawings.
• Maintains and updates utility location records, tickets and reports.

Responsibilities

• Locates underground utilities by marking utility lines and mains using locating equipment and drawing books, reading and interpreting construction drawings, lifting and exposing manhole covers and water valves, inspecting sites, distinguishing departmental utilities from others and reporting all buried boxes for excavation.
• Manages utility location request records by sorting tickets from call center, routing records, entering data into computer programs, researching and gathering information for reports, recording information onto log sheets, maintaining summary records, monitoring expiring tickets, sending responses to call center and complying with 48 hour state regulation.
• Must be able to distinguish between colors in order to properly color code utilities and determine the presence of other utility marking, perform clerical duties including filing, scheduling meetings, and answering the telephone for customer inquiries, and work closely with others in a team oriented environment.
• Requires ability to make legible log entries and rough sketched of utilities and landmarks with dimensions, use Engineer's scale and to measure distances, able to use personal computer for e-mail, web access, data entry and retrieval
• Must be able to bend, push, pull, lift, and carry up to 50 pounds, use pick and shovel: stand, stoop, or walk for extended time periods.
