Job summary

The City of Akron is seeking a semi-skilled worker for the operation and maintenance of sewer and water utility plants and systems. The role involves assisting skilled operators and mechanics with routine maintenance, repairs, and servicing of equipment across Sewer and Water Bureaus.

Completion of a high school diploma or GED is required, plus a valid Ohio driver's license. A competitive examination and a training program are part of the selection process.

Qualifications

• Graduation from an accredited high school or GED.
• 1 year of general laboring or machine/equipment operation paid experience, or an equivalent combination of paid experience and training.
• Equivalency allows up to 50% paid experience substituted with related education and training.
• Possession of a valid State of Ohio driver's license.

Responsibilities

• Assist skilled operators in operation activities such as starting, stopping, adjusting, lubricating, cleaning, skimming and servicing of treatment plant equipment.
• Assist skilled mechanics in overhauling and repairing equipment (pumps, conveyors, racks, screens, fans, blowers, generators, flushing/cleaning systems).
• Independently perform routine servicing and minor repairs (packing, oiling, lubricating, adjusting).
• Use cleaning/flushing equipment for CSO storage facilities and perform building repairs and laboring duties.
