- Assist patients, staff, and physicians in a high-acuity, procedure-based urology department
- Provide quality care and customer service to a designated patient population
- Safely assist with or independently perform skilled urology procedures according to guidelines and written physician orders
- Administer and document medications safely and accurately
- Prepare patients for examinations and procedures; obtain consents; prepare and label biopsies
- Document patient care and encounter data accurately
- Triage patient calls, collect pertinent information, route issues to physicians, return calls, and schedule appointments as needed
- Provide patient and family education and teaching
- Apply universal precautions and infection-control procedures
- Support front-desk scheduling and telephone-management responsibilities
- Monitor patient flow and physician schedules; complete daily department tasks
- Enter authorizations and schedule surgeries and procedures
- Maintain supplies, inventories, narcotic controls, equipment, and inspection readiness
- Respond to urgent and emergent situations and activate emergency procedures
- Complete quality-assurance assignments and quality initiatives
- Prepare, use, clean, sterilize, and process cystoscopes and ultrasound probes
- Perform and assist with cystoscopy, stent removal, prostate biopsy, bladder Botox, urethral dilation, vasectomy, circumcision, and other in-office procedures
- Independently perform uroflowmetry, bladder-scan ultrasound, urinary catheterization, suprapubic catheter changes, and BCG bladder instillation
- Travel to other sites and assist other departments as business needs arise
Requirements
- California Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) — CA Board of Vocational Nursing & Psychiatric Technicians — REQUIRED
- AHA Basic Life Support for Healthcare Professional (AHA BLS Healthcare) — American Heart Association — REQUIRED
- 1 Year LVN experience in related clinical area — preferred
- Ambulatory care experience — preferred
- ACLS Certification — American Heart Association — preferred
- Vocational Nurse IV Therapy/Blood Withdrawal Certification — preferred
- Ability to type a minimum of 30 words per minute with 0–2 errors
- Knowledge of insurance, utilization review, scheduling requirements, and front desk responsibilities
- Skills as a Licensed Practical Nurse or Licensed Vocational Nurse
- Ability to prepare patients for examinations, tests, or treatments and explain procedures
- Ability to observe patients, document and report changes in patient conditions, and take necessary action
- Ability to collect blood, urine, or sputum samples and perform routine laboratory tests
- Must adhere to professional standards, healthcare organization policies and procedures, federal, state, and local requirements, and JCAHO standards
