Job summary

Northwestern Medicine is seeking a Health Unit Coordinator to perform unit-based reception, clerical tasks, medical records and patient registration. The role requires setting priorities, remaining calm in emergencies, and communicating with patients, families and staff.

You will serve as a liaison between patient care units and support departments, manage unit workflow with the charge RN and/or assistant manager, and participate in continuous improvement initiatives.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Basic computer knowledge.
• English communication skills (verbal and written).
• Ability to use interpreter services effectively.
• Excellent customer service skills.

Responsibilities

• Provides accurate information and timely updates to patients and customers.
• Addresses questions and concerns promptly or directs to the right resource.
• Assists patients and families with directions and navigation within the facility.
• Maintains unit workflow and communicates with the charge RN and supervisor.
• Coordinates with other departments to support interdisciplinary patient care.
• Retrieves lab results and ensures nurses are informed of critical data.
• Transcribes orders accurately and verifies clinical data in the system.
• Participates in continuous improvement and cost-reduction efforts.
