Job summary

SEIU Local 509 is seeking a Director of Human Resources to manage day-to-day HR operations, ensure legal and regulatory compliance, and support union-related HR needs. The role involves onboarding, payroll, benefits, leave administration, and policy development in a fast-growing union environment.

Qualifications

• SHRM-SCP, SPHR, IPMA-SCP or comparable senior level certification.
• At least five years of progressively responsible professional experience in HR, labor relations or employment law with strong background in employee relations, HR administration, compensation and benefits, and regulatory compliance, preferably in a unionized setting.
• At least two years of supervisory experience preferred.
• Knowledge of employment law, workplace investigations and labor relations.
• Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, including the ability to independently write clear memos, policies, and responses to complaints, grievances and employee inquiries.

Responsibilities

• Oversee day-to-day HR functions and coordinate policies, practices, and compliance.
• Lead onboarding, payroll, benefits coordination, leave administration, and records management.
• Advise managers on supervision practices and employee relations; support recruitment and hiring processes.
• Coordinate with benefits providers, legal counsel, and union leadership as needed.
• Develop and maintain HR procedures, calendars, and institutional knowledge.
