Job summary

HAI Group in Cheshire, CT seeks an undergraduate or graduate student for an Underwriting Intern role. Qualifications

• Required: Currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a degree in business, insurance, risk management, finance, data analytics, STEM, or related fields.
• Work on-site in the HAI Group office, Cheshire, CT, Monday–Friday.
• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without employer sponsorship now or in the future.
• Preferred: coursework, project experience, or prior work/internship exposure related to insurance, underwriting, business operations, finance, or data analysis.

Responsibilities

• Analyze exposure data, rating information, loss trends, and coverage amounts to identify patterns and implications.
• Assist with underwriting research involving catastrophe exposure, coverage evaluation, market conditions, profitability, and reinsurance requirements.
• Review and organize information used to evaluate public housing authority and affordable housing risks for coverage eligibility.
• Build clear reports and presentations communicating findings to underwriters and leadership.
• Collaborate with Underwriting and business partners to understand cross-functional input supporting member service and insurance solutions.
• Complete capstone-style project or final presentation providing a useful resource for future underwriting analysis.

Internship Overview

HAI Group is seeking a motivated, analytical, and curious undergraduate or graduate student to join the Underwriting team as an Underwriting Intern. This internship offers exposure to challenging, real-world work within Underwriting and Insurance Services, supported by a structured learning and development experience.

You will work alongside underwriting professionals, collaborate with business partners, and gain insight into how a property-casualty insurer evaluates risk, determines coverage eligibility, prices accounts, and supports affordable housing organizations. You will also have opportunities to network across HAI Group, engage with leaders, participate in mentorship and community outreach, and present your work to key stakeholders.

This is a full-time, paid internship that is required to be on-site in the HAI Group office, located in Cheshire, CT, Monday–Friday. The internship program will run from May 31st – Mid August.

Essential Functions

The intern will contribute to projects that strengthen underwriting insight and support informed risk selection and pricing. Assignments may include:

• Analyze exposure data, rating information, loss trends, and coverage amounts to identify patterns, exceptions, and business implications
• Assist with underwriting research involving catastrophe exposure, coverage evaluation, market conditions, program profitability, and reinsurance requirements
• Review and organize information used to evaluate current and prospective public housing authority and affordable housing risks for coverage eligibility
• Build clear, accurate reports, and presentations that communicate findings to underwriters and leadership
• Collaborate with Underwriting and business partners such as Claims, Marketing, and Risk Control to understand how cross-functional input supports member service and insurance solutions
• Complete a capstone-style project or final presentation that provides a useful resource for future underwriting analysis and decision-making
• Perform other related duties and special projects as assigned

Job Requirements

Required:

• Currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a degree in business, insurance, risk management, finance, data analytics, STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), or other related degrees.
• Work on-site in the HAI Group office, located in Cheshire, CT, Monday–Friday
• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship, now or at any time in the future.

Preferred:

• Coursework, project experience, or prior work /internship exposure related to insurance, underwriting, business operations, finance, or data analysis

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

• Strong analytical and critical-thinking skills, with the ability to break down complex problems and identify meaningful insights
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain findings clearly to different audiences
• Proficiency with Microsoft 365 applications, particularly Excel, Co-Pilot, Word, and PowerPoint
• Attention to detail and a commitment to producing accurate, well-organized work
• Creative and methodical approach to problem-solving
• Ability to manage priorities, meet deadlines, and work effectively both independently and as part of a team
• Professional curiosity, initiative, adaptability, and a strong desire to learn

Department Overview

The Underwriting department evaluates current and prospective public housing authority and affiliated business to determine coverage eligibility through HARRG, HAPI, or HEIC. The team analyzes risk and exposures, prices accounts in accordance with underwriting guidelines and state requirements, and supports coverage evaluation, catastrophe exposure analysis, price negotiation, member relationships, program profitability, market awareness, reinsurance requirements, and policy review. Underwriting works closely with Claims, Marketing, Risk Control, and other departments to deliver a high level of service and valuable insurance solutions to members.

$22 - $25 USD
