Job summary

HAI Group in Cheshire, CT is seeking a Senior Staff Accountant to prepare balance sheets, P&L, and other financial reports. You will analyze trends, costs, revenues, and obligations to forecast future results, and you may advise on resource use and tax strategies. You’ll lead enterprise closing with coaching and oversight for staff.

The role requires on-site presence for training in Cheshire, CT and building strong partnerships with internal teams and external banks and brokers.

Job description

The Senior Staff Accountant p repares balance sheets, profit and loss statements, and other financial reports. Responsibilities also include analyzing trends, costs, revenues, financial commitments, and obligations incurred to predict future revenues and expenses. They may offer suggestions about resource utilization, tax strategies, and assumptions underlying budget forecasts. The Senior Staff Accountant h as knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within the insurance industry and relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals connecting business partners to financial concepts and regulations. The Senior Staff Accountant continually educates themselves about the enterprise and diverse internal businesses. They are considered a subject matter expert and may be expected to coach/mentor junior staff and provide leadership and oversight while taking the lead in the enterprise closing process.

Essential Functions
  • Make monthly accounting entries; supports accountant team and review staff's work to ensure completeness.
  • Complete statutory/non-profit filings and keep current with financial and legal requirements.
  • Perform specialized functions including investment accounting, membership accounting (dividends and investment in subsidiaries), and taxes (federal and state).
  • Own the monthly financial statements and variance reports; providing leadership with overviews upon request of senior financial leaders and enterprise business partners (e.g., financial flash reports, supplemental summary financial reports).
  • Meets reporting deadlines with accuracy through effective time management
  • Learns and utilizes accounting and audit management best practices
Job Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or related degree required
  • 5+ years of accounting experience required
  • Experience within property-casualty insurance and statutory accounting, strongly preferred.
  • Strong experience with financial data bases and excel
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship, now or at any time in the future.
  • Must be able to be on‑site for two weeks for training upon hire in our Cheshire, CT office
