Job summary

Great American Insurance Group is seeking an Underwriting Specialist to join its Specialty Human Services team. The role supports the Northeast territory with a fully remote work arrangement, preferring candidates in the Northeast or Illinois/Wisconsin.

You will evaluate and underwrite new and renewal business, analyze risk data, and collaborate with actuaries, agents, brokers, and clients to inform decisions.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required.
• Generally, 5+ years of underwriting experience.
• Professional designations (AU/CPCU/CIC/INS/ARM) preferred.

Responsibilities

• Evaluate and underwrite new and renewal business in line with underwriting guidelines.
• Analyze risk data to determine coverage, pricing, and terms.
• Collaborate with actuaries, agents, brokers, and clients for information.
• Order and review reports (motor vehicle, loss history, outside inspections) to inform decisions.
• Document underwriting decisions and ensure regulatory compliance.
• Communicate decisions clearly to internal teams, agents, and brokers.
• Stay updated on industry trends and market conditions.
• Develop and maintain relationships to generate and retain business.
• Interpret, explain, and market products and services.

Our Specialty Human Services Division is seeking an Underwriting Specialist to join its team. This role supports the Northeast territory spanning Maine to Virgina. This position is fully remote, with a preference for candidates located in the Northeast or Illinois/Wisconsin.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities

• Evaluates and underwrites new and renewal business in accordance with Company underwriting guidelines and risk appetite.
• Analyzes risk data to make informed decisions on coverage, pricing, and terms.
• Collaborates with actuaries, agents, brokers, and clients to obtain necessary information and clarify details.
• Orders and reviews additional reports and screens, such as motor vehicle reports, loss history reports, outside inspections, etc., to inform decisions.
• Ensures proper documentation of underwriting decisions and compliance with state and federal insurance regulations.
• Evaluates existing policies for potential renewal or modification.
• Communicates underwriting decisions clearly and effectively to internal teams, agents, and brokers.
• Stays updated on industry trends, regulatory changes, and market conditions.
• Develops and maintains effective business relationships with internal and external customers/coworkers, focusing on generating new business and retaining profitable business.
• Interprets, explains, and markets products and services.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Economics, Risk Management and Insurance, or a related field or equivalent experience.
• Generally, 5+ years of experience in Underwriting or a related field.
• Completion of or continuing progress toward a professional designation preferred, such as Associate in Underwriting (AU), Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU), Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC), Program in General Insurance (INS), or Associate of Risk Management (ARM).
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Demonstrates strong analytical skills with attention to detail.
• Position requires occasional travel.

Business Unit: Specialty Human Services Salary Range: $90,000.00 -$125,000.00
