Job summary

Sun West Mortgage Company is seeking an experienced Mortgage Underwriter for a fully remote position in the United States. The ideal candidate will underwrite FHA, VA, and Conventional mortgage loans, using DU/LP to support credit decisions and maintain high-quality loan files.

The role requires active FHA DE underwriter certification (CHUMS ID) and a minimum of 24 months underwriting FHA loans, with a track record of meeting production goals and complying with HVCC and federal lending rules.

Qualifications

• Active FHA DE Underwriter Certification with CHUMS ID.
• Minimum of 24 months actively underwriting FHA loans.
• Extensive experience underwriting FHA, VA, and Conventional mortgage products.
• Strong knowledge of DU and LP.
• Thorough understanding of mortgage compliance requirements, including HVCC.
• Excellent analytical, written, and verbal communication skills.
• Exceptional attention to detail and the ability to make sound independent credit decisions.

Responsibilities

• Independently assess and underwrite FHA, VA, and Conventional mortgage loan applications per Agency, Investor, and Sun West guidelines.
• Analyze borrower creditworthiness, collateral, income, assets, and AU findings (DU and LP).
• Issue accurate Loan Analysis and Loan Summary documentation.
• Downgrade loans to Manual Underwrite when required.
• Review complex income calculations, including self-employed borrowers and tax returns.
• Verify borrower assets, reserves, gift funds, and required documentation.
• Calculate loan amounts for Rate and Term and Streamline Refinance transactions.
• Identify and resolve HUD-1 settlement statement deficiencies.
• Stay current on FHA, VA, Agency, and investor guideline updates.
• Consistently meet underwriting quality and production goals with high accuracy.

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Mortgage Underwriter with active FHA Direct Endorsement (DE) and VA Staff Appraisal Reviewer (SAR) certifications to join our growing team.

This is a fully remote opportunity for an experienced underwriting professional who is confident making independent credit decisions on FHA, VA, and Conventional mortgage products. You will play a critical role in maintaining loan quality, managing risk, and supporting lending decisions that directly impact $20 million to $30 million in monthly loan production.

Key Responsibilities

• Independently assess and underwrite FHA, VA, and Conventional mortgage loan applications in accordance with Agency, Investor, and Sun West guidelines.
• Analyze borrower creditworthiness, collateral, income, assets, and Automated Underwriting System findings, including Desktop Underwriter (DU) and Loan Product Advisor (LP).
• Issue accurate Loan Analysis and Loan Summary documentation.
• Downgrade loans to Manual Underwrite when required.
• Review complex income calculations, including self employed borrowers and tax returns.
• Verify borrower assets, reserves, gift funds, and required documentation.

• Stay current on FHA, VA, Agency, and investor guideline updates, including mortgagee letters and federal lending regulations.

Required Qualifications

• Minimum of 24 months actively underwriting FHA loans.
• Extensive experience underwriting FHA, VA, and Conventional mortgage products.
• Strong knowledge of Desktop Underwriter (DU) and Loan Product Advisor (LP).
• Thorough understanding of mortgage compliance requirements, including:
  • Home Valuation Code of Conduct (HVCC).
• Excellent analytical, written, and verbal communication skills.
• Exceptional attention to detail and the ability to make sound independent credit decisions.
• Proven ability to meet or exceed underwriting production goals.

Technical Skills

• Advanced proficiency with Adobe Acrobat.
• Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
• Experience using mortgage loan origination and underwriting systems.
• Excellent computer literacy and typing skills.
