Overview

This position is a Mortgage Underwriter in the United States. This role offers an opportunity to play a critical part in ensuring every mortgage loan is accurately reviewed, structured, and approved to meet investor and company standards. The Mortgage Underwriter will evaluate borrower creditworthiness, analyze complex financial documents, and collaborate closely with sales and operations teams to ensure seamless loan closings. By applying deep knowledge of investor guidelines and creative problem-solving, this position directly impacts customer experience and operational success. Responsibilities
  • Review and validate loan applications, calculations, and documentation to ensure accuracy and compliance with investor guidelines
  • Evaluate borrower credit capacity through detailed analysis of income, assets, and debt ratios, including self-employed borrower calculations
  • Assess and approve third-party documentation such as purchase contracts, title reports, escrow instructions, and environmental reports
  • Collaborate with loan officers, processors, and closers to identify creative solutions for challenging or denied loan files
  • Escalate complex loan issues to Underwriting Manager/Director as needed
  • Maintain knowledge of secondary market guidelines and ensure compliance with turn-time expectations and SLAs
  • Manage a daily loan pipeline to meet service and production targets
Qualifications
  • 5+ years of residential mortgage underwriting experience, including FNMA, FHLMC; FHA and VA experience is a plus
  • Advanced knowledge of Desktop Underwriter (DU) and Loan Product Advisor (LPA)
  • Experience underwriting to multiple investor guidelines and overlays
  • Expertise in refinance and purchase mortgage underwriting
  • Proficiency with loan origination software (Encompass or LendingPad preferred)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-production, and remote-first environment
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills and the ability to structure solutions for complex loan scenarios
