Job summary

The New School’s University Learning Center (ULC) hires tutors to support students in writing, presentations, time management, and overall academic skills. Responsibilities include tutoring on brainstorming and drafting, helping with citations, and leading workshops.

We value reliability, punctuality, and a commitment of 6+ hours per week. Applicants should be enrolled in a relevant program at The New School and have at least one year of tutoring or formal English/business writing teaching

Qualifications

  • Current enrollment in a relevant program at The New School.
  • 3.0 GPA or higher.
  • At least one year of tutoring or formal English/business writing teaching experience.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Demonstrated reliability and punctuality.
  • Commitment to 6 or more tutoring hours per week.
  • Experience working with students with ADHD (plus).

  • Tutor graduate and undergraduate students in writing projects, including brainstorming, outlining, argument development, drafting, revising, and citation guidance.
  • Assist with oral presentations, time management, and plagiarism avoidance (including AI).
  • Provide cover-letter, resume, personal-statement, thesis, dissertation, and research-proposal support.
  • Lead in-class or specialized ULC workshops.
  • Create a welcoming environment by respecting diverse cultures, languages, and experiences.
  • Complete administrative tasks such as session briefings and daily attendance summaries.

Job description

The University Learning Center (ULC) supports The New School’s students through one‑on‑one tutoring, workshops, and other academic resources. Tutors help students improve writing, presentations, time management, and overall academic skills.

Responsibilities

• Tutor graduate and undergraduate students in writing projects, including brainstorming, outlining, argument development, drafting, revising, and citation guidance.
• Assist with oral presentations, time management, and plagiarism avoidance (including AI).
• Provide cover‑letter, resume, personal‑statement, thesis, dissertation, and research‑proposal support.
• Lead in‑class or specialized ULC workshops.
• Create a welcoming environment by respecting diverse cultures, languages, and experiences.
• Complete administrative tasks such as session briefings and daily attendance summaries.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Current enrollment in a relevant program at The New School.
  • At least one year of tutoring or formal English/all business writing teaching experience.
  • 3.0 GPA or higher.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Demonstrated reliability and punctuality.
  • Commitment to 6 or more tutoring hours per week.
  • Experience working with students with ADHD (plus).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Federal Work Study (preferred).
  • Experience with ESL and graduate‑level students (strongly preferred).
Work Mode and Compensation

• Hybrid work model.
• Hourly rate: $29.20/hr through August 31 (new rate to be determined by the next collective bargaining agreement).
