Job summary

The New School’s University Learning Center is seeking a graduate student tutor for math and economics. You will work with both undergraduate and graduate students, including topics like Quantitative Reasoning, Statistics, R, Tableau, SPSS, and Calculus, in a hybrid setting.

Responsibilities include tutoring, preparing brief session notes, emailing attendance summaries, and leading ULC workshops as needed. Commitment is at least 6 hours per week, with compensation at $29.20 per hour through

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a graduate program at The New School.
  • At least one year tutoring or teaching math or economics.
  • Completed Algebra, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, and Statistics.
  • GPA 3.0 or higher in relevant math courses.
  • Excellent communication, reliability and punctuality.
  • Commit to at least 6 tutoring hours per week.

Overview

The University Learning Center (ULC) is dedicated to providing academic support to The New School’s diverse student population through one‑on‑one tutoring sessions, workshops, and related activities. Tutors help students become stronger and independent learners, supporting their academic success.

Job Responsibilities
  • Tutor undergraduate and graduate students in math and economics subjects, including Quantitative Reasoning, Statistics, R, Tableau, SPSS, Economics, Accounting, Excel, Math Merchandising, Math Tools, and Calculus.
  • Assist students of varying skill levels, from reviewing basic concepts to solving complex problems.
  • Maintain a professional, welcoming environment that respects students’ self‑identities, language skills, and experiences.
  • Complete administrative tasks such as writing brief session descriptions and emailing daily attendance summaries.
  • Lead in‑class and specialized ULC workshops as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be currently enrolled in a graduate program at The New School.
  • Must have at least one year of tutoring or teaching experience in math or economics.
  • Must have completed Algebra, Pre‑Calculus, Calculus, and Statistics courses.
  • Must have earned at least a B+ GPA in relevant mathematics courses.
  • Must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Must possess excellent communication skills.
  • Must demonstrate reliability and punctuality.
  • Must commit to at least 6 tutoring hours per week.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with ESL and graduate‑level students.
  • Experience working with students with ADHD.
  • Prior tutoring or teaching experience.
  • Federal Work Study preferred.
Work Conditions
  • Hybrid work mode.
  • Commit to at least 6 tutoring hours per week.
Pay and Hours

Hourly rate: $29.20 per hour through August 31. New pay rate will be determined by the next collective bargaining agreement.
