Job summary

The University of Houston System seeks a Telecommunicator/Dispatcher for the Police Department. The role handles emergency and non-emergency requests from the campus community, dispatching calls to officers via CAD, monitoring alarms, operating radios and other equipment.

Requires a HS diploma or GED with grammar and math skills, plus three years of related experience and Intermediate Telecommunicator Certification through TCOLE. Veterans are encouraged to apply; background checks are required.

Qualifications

  • Requires grammar, spelling, punctuation and basic mathematical functions like percentages, ratios, etc., typically attained with a high school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of three (3) years directly-related job experience.
  • Intermediate Telecommunicator Certification through TCOLE.

Responsibilities

  • Responds to requests for service, information and other business that comes into the Police Department by telephone, emergency call box or in person at the public service window.
  • Transmits requests for service and related information to the appropriate Police Officer.
  • Inputs information into a computer database; reviews and corrects data as necessary.
  • Monitors campus fire and burglar alarm systems, acknowledges triggered alarms, and dispatches officers when needed.
  • Operates radio consoles, portable radios, Dictaphone recorder, Telecopier and other equipment located in the Communication Center.
  • Issues equipment and supplies such as radios, batteries and keys to department personnel and maintains related records.
  • May provide guidance and training to new dispatchers.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Description

MQ: Education: Requires a basic knowledge of grammar, spelling, punctuation and simple mathematical functions like percentages, ratios, etc. as might normally be acquired through attainment of a high school diploma or GED.

Experience: Requires a minimum of three (3) year directly-related job experience.

Certification/Licensing: Requires technical certification or licensing directly related to the job, as specified on the job posting details. Intermediate Telecommunicator Certification through TCOLE.
