Job summary

North Slope Borough is seeking a full-time Waste Collector to perform duties including driving and waste collection in Kaktovik, Alaska. The role requires at least a high school diploma or GED, one year of truck driving experience, and a valid Alaska CDL with N endorsement.

Immunization and Hazwoper certification requirements apply during probation. Responsibilities include maintaining logs, supervising loading/unloading, inspecting equipment, and ensuring safety compliance.

Qualifications

• High School graduate or GED, or equivalent combination of education and related work experience.
• Documentation of sufficient Diphtheria immunization prior to employment; Tetanus immunization; Hepatitis A vaccination series with first dose prior and second dose six months after; Hepatitis B series with first dose prior, second dose two months after, final dose six months after the first dose.
• One year of truck driving experience.
• Valid Alaska Commercial Driver's License with N Endorsement Code for hauling liquids in bulk, meeting NSB criteria.
• Ability to obtain 40-hour Hazwoper certification within probationary period.

Responsibilities

• Maintain truck logs, inspection forms, maintenance records and daily trip reports.
• Supervise loading and unloading of trucks; may perform Waste Collector duties as needed.
• Inspect and clean equipment and facilities; report maintenance needs.
• Assist with inspection, cleaning, maintenance and repair of vehicles.
• Comply with all safety rules and regulations.
• May be required to work non-traditional hours including evenings, holidays and weekends.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Summary or Purpose

All Borough employees who occupy positions where federal law mandates testing shall comply with the requirements of the federal regulations and will be subject to pre‑employment, random, post‑accident, reasonable suspicion return to duty and follow‑up testing.

Pumps sewage from septic tanks to pump truck; lifts and carries liquid waste and trash from homes to collection trucks; collects trash from public sites; delivers water as directed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Maintain truck log, truck inspection forms, maintenance record and daily trip reports.
• Supervises loading and unloading of truck; may load or unload truck as needed, and perform the duties of a Waste Collector.
• Inspects and cleans equipment and facility; reports maintenance needs and deficiencies to supervisor.
• Assist with inspection, cleaning, maintenance and repair of vehicles.
• Comply with all safety rules and regulations.
• Must be polite and courteous to the public.
• May be required to work a non‑traditional work schedule to include evening, holidays and weekends.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of North Slope Borough organization, operations, policies and procedures.

Education, Experience, Certifications and Licenses Required

• High School graduate or G.E.D/or, a combination of 12 years of education and related work experience.
• Documentation of adequate Diphtheria Immunization prior to employment;
• Documentation of Tetanus Immunization prior to employment;
• Documentation of Hepatitis A vaccination series with the first dose prior to employment, the second dose six months after;
• Documentation of Hepatitis B vaccination series with the first dose prior to employment, the second dose two months after and the final dose six months after the first dose;
• One year of truck driving experience;
• Valid Alaska Commercial Driver's License with N Endorsement Code (hauling liquids in bulk (tank)) that meets North Slope Borough insurance criteria.
• Ability to obtain 40‑Hour Hazwoper certification within the probationary period.

This position serves Kaktovik, Alaska and the outlying villages. This position is full‑time, NOT Rotational. Housing is NOT provided. Therefore, due to extreme weather conditions in the arctic and for your safety, housing accommodations must be located and pre‑arranged by the applicant prior to the start of employment. The applicant must pay for housing; it is not provided by the NSB. Please note: The Borough is currently experiencing a housing shortage.
