Job summary

North Slope Borough is seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator to support road, runway, and landfill maintenance in Alaska. You will operate heavy machinery, perform daily safety checks, and maintain logs and reports to ensure compliant operations.

Candidates should have a High School diploma or GED and an Alaska CDL; CPR/First Aid certifications are preferred. The role may require non-traditional hours and on-call status, with potential village travel.

Responsibilities

• Operate heavy equipment following safety regulations and procedures.
• Maintain roads, runways, and landfill access areas.
• Inspect vehicles and equipment before use; complete inspection checklists.
• Maintain vehicle logs, inspection forms, and daily trip reports.
• Report maintenance needs to supervisor and perform basic repairs.
• Load/unload aircraft with heavy equipment.
• May work evenings, holidays, weekends; potential 24-hour on-call duties.
• Attend required safety meetings and safety training.
• Travel to village as required for assignments.
• Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Job description

All Borough employees who occupy positions where federal law mandates testing shall comply with the requirements of the federal regulations and will be subject to pre-employment, random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion return to duty and follow-up testing.

Operates North Slope Borough heavy equipment; maintains roads, airports, and landfills.

• Operate heavy equipment and other machinery in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures.
• Maintains and clears roads, airport runway and access roads, and landfill areas.
• Inspects vehicles and equipment prior to operations; completes shift inspection checklist.
• Maintain vehicle log, inspection forms, maintenance record and daily trip reports.
• Inspects and cleans equipment and facility; reports maintenance needs and deficiencies to supervisor.
• Loads and unloads aircraft with heavy equipment.
• Must be polite and courteous to the public.
• May be required to work a non-traditional work schedule to include evening, holidays and weekends and may be subject to 24 hour on-call status.
• Attend all required scheduled safety meetings.
• Village travel as required.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge of North Slope Borough organization, operations, policies and procedures.

Knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances and regulations involved in heavy equipment operation.

Valid Alaska Commercial Drivers License that meets North Slope Borough insurance criteria.

High School graduate or G.E.D/or, a combination of 12 years of education and related work experience.

Valid Alaska Drivers License that meets North Slope Borough insurance criteria.

Required to obtain Incident Command System (IS) 100, IS 200, IS 700, IS 800

Required to obtain CPR, AED and Basic First Aid Certifications

One year of experience with heavy equipment operations and maintenance.
