Job summary

American Traveler is seeking an RN for a Med/Surg Float Pool position in Alabama. Requires an active AL or compact RN license, 18+ months MedSurg/ICU experience, and 12-hour night shifts.

Unit assignments include Level I Trauma Center, NICU, and Primary Stroke Center; nights are 7p-7a with a 36-48 hour schedule and 36 hours weekly. Cerner or Epic EMR experience is required, and travel housing and licensure reimbursements are provided.

Qualifications

• Active RN license (AL or compact) required.
• BLS and NIHSS certifications required.
• Minimum 18 months MedSurg/ICU experience required.
• Cerner or Epic EMR experience required; Cerner preferred for ICU.
• At least 1 year of trauma/surgical experience for Trauma Surgical units.
• One professional reference from a charge nurse or above within past 12 months.
• Copies of certifications and date of birth required.

Responsibilities

• Staff Float Pool MedSurg unit across Trauma Surgical, Neuroscience, MedSurg/Oncology, Orthopedics, and MS/Ortho/Urology.
• Support patient ratios of 1:4 to 1:6 depending on unit.
• Work 12-hour night shifts (7p–7a) with 36 standard hours per week.
• Weekend rotation required; no on-call requirements.
• EMR is Cerner, with Epic experience considered.
• Use Plum 360 IV pumps, Omnicell, and Spacelabs monitors; telemetry monitored by techs.
• Floating to like units/patient locations; orientation provided on first day.

• Skills may include wound care, chest tubes, NGT, IV starts, trach care, PEG tubes, ostomy care, foley catheters, and drain management depending on unit assignment

Responsibilities

• Level I Trauma Center, Level III NICU, and Primary Stroke Center hospital setting
• Staff Float Pool MedSurg unit covering multiple specialty areas including Trauma Surgical, Neuroscience, MedSurg/Oncology, Orthopedics, and MS/Ortho/Urology
• Patient ratios range from 1:4 to 1:6 depending on unit
• 12-hour night shifts (7p-7a) on a 36-48 hour schedule, 36 standard hours per week
• Weekend rotation required, either every other weekend or 4 weekend days per month
• No on-call requirements
• Floating required to like units/patient locations (MS-MS, MS-ICU task, MS-ER/MS holds, ICU-ICU, ICU-MS task, ICU-ER/ICU holds)
• EMR is Cerner, with Epic experience considered
• Uses Plum 360 IV pumps, Omnicell medication dispensing, and Spacelabs monitors
• Telemetry monitored by dedicated tele techs, but RNs required to interpret and confirm strip readings every 4 hours
• Unit support includes CNAs, HUC/receptionist, charge nurse, phlebotomy, IV/VAT team, and hospitalist coverage
• Scheduling follows a 4-week cycle using Smart Square, no self-scheduling
• Assigned to a home unit on the first day of orientation
• New-to-facility travelers or returning travelers absent 1+ year receive 24 hours of classroom orientation and 24 hours on the unit
• Holiday coverage expected for one major and one minor seasonal holiday per policy, though specific dates off are not guaranteed prior to arrival
• Facility maintains blackout dates throughout the year during which time off requests require additional approval
• Up to 7 days of time off can be pre-approved, excluding blackout dates
• Any scrub color permitted
• Free parking available in designated parking deck levels
• First-time travelers are welcome to apply
• Former staff members must wait 6 months from their last shift before returning in a travel role
• Candidates must reside outside a 60-mile radius of the facility, as local candidates are not accepted
