Job summary

City Rescue Mission in Oklahoma City is seeking a Shelter Advocate to support our housing‑focused shelter serving men, women, and children. This role helps set a compassionate and respectful tone, engaging clients and supporting day‑to‑day shelter operations to ensure a safe, welcoming environment in crisis situations.

The Shelter Advocate welcomes new clients, assesses eligibility, coordinates with Case Management and other teams, documents services, and helps maintain clean, secure spaces

Qualifications

• Experience with people experiencing homelessness or related challenges.
• Experience with social service agencies and functions.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills.
• Strong time management and organizational abilities.
• Knowledge of diverse populations including homeless, mental health, and disabilities.
• Proficient use of computers and data systems to track service delivery.
• Ability to resolve conflicts and respond to crises calmly.
• Trustworthy, reliable, and level‑headed.
• Knowledge of community resources across neighborhoods.

Responsibilities

• Welcome new clients and meet immediate needs upon entry to the shelter.
• Assess eligibility for services based on guidelines and policies.
• Demonstrate compassion and care for individuals experiencing homelessness.
• Apply trauma‑informed care principles in daily interactions.
• Explain available services, shelter guidelines, bed availability, and expectations.
• Complete the full intake process for new clients.
• Monitor dorms and assigned areas to ensure a clean, safe environment.
• Supervise client laundry, meals, and daily activities.
• Coordinate with Case Management, Recovery, Vocational, and other teams.
• Document client information and services in the agency database.
• Report concerns or safety issues promptly to a supervisor.
• Observe vulnerable populations for signs of abuse or special needs and report as required.
