Job summary

Volkert Inc. is seeking an experienced Transportation Project Engineer to support our Gulf Region, located in Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee.

You will lead and assist in transportation project design, manage schedules and budgets, and coordinate with clients and subconsultants to deliver high‑quality plans. Requires 4+ years in roadway design or traffic engineering, ABET‑accredited civil engineering degree, and a PE license.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program (M.S. a plus)
• 4-10+ years of relevant experience in roadway design, traffic engineering, and/or transportation planning
• PE license
• Experience with DOT design methods, plan preparation, standards, and specifications, with proven skills in meeting DOT expectations, schedules, and budgets
• Familiarity with state and FHWA design standards, MUTCD, and AASHTO guidelines
• Proficiency with OpenRoads Designer and/or MicroStation
• Proficiency with MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
• Self-motivated and dependable, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team to meet deadlines and deliver high-quality work
• Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening
• Valid driver's license and a satisfactory motor vehicle report (MVR)

Responsibilities

• Lead or assist in the design of transportation projects, including roadway geometry, drainage, traffic signals, signing and pavement marking, ITS, and maintenance of traffic plans
• Conduct traffic operations analyses and prepare traffic impact, safety, corridor, and long-range planning studies
• Prepare construction plans, specifications, quantities, cost estimates, technical reports, and memorandums
• Perform detailed engineering calculations and apply established DOT standards and practices to solve problems
• Direct EIs, designers, and interns, and coordinate with subconsultants to deliver projects on schedule, within budget, and in line with company QA/QC standards
• Participate in client meetings, business development efforts, and team initiatives
• Perform other duties as assigned
