Job summary

Petersburg City Public Schools is seeking a Transportation Mechanic to service and repair the mechanical systems of heavy and light vehicles used by the school division, including buses, cars, vans and utilities. You will diagnose issues, perform preventive maintenance, and ensure safety standards are met.

Required qualifications include a High school diploma, 21+ years of age, and a valid CDL with air brake, passenger and school bus endorsements or equivalent license.

Job Summary
The Transportation Mechanic will service and repair the mechanical aspects (Engines, Transmissions, driveline and brakes) of "heavy" and "light" classified School Board and other county vehicles (buses, cars, utilities and vans).
Essential Duties
Knowledge of computerized diagnostic equipment
Performs preventative maintenance check-ups and services on gasoline, diesel, and propane school division vehicles.
Completes repairs on school division vehicles (e.g. replace engine valves, pistons, and bearings; assemble cooling, fuel and exhaust systems, etc).
Inspects, adjusts, repairs, and overhauls breaks, brake systems, transmissions, ignition system, electrical, driveline and a/c and heating systems
Responds to emergency road calls from disabled school equipment, makes minor adjustments and/or has the vehicle towed to the bus garage.
Trains and supervises automotive servicemen when needed.
Performs miscellaneous duties as needed or requested by leadership or school administrator (snow removal, clearing parking lots, etc.)
Duties require examining vehicles and communicating the nature and extent of damage or malfunction.
Diagnose bus problems and plan work procedures.
Use charts, technical manuals, and high tech computerized diagnostic equipment to identify and fix problems.
Performs state and safety inspections, conducts road service calls, test drive vehicles, prepares and maintains records and reports concerning repairs of equipment.
Performs daily and monthly preventive maintenance and repair of diesel engine school buses to ensure compliance with state and federal safety guidelines and regulations.
Repair tasks include, but is not limited to diesel engine, fuel, electrical/electronic, power train, suspension, air brakes, steering, heating/cooling, and exhaust systems.
Other duties include repair and replacement of school bus lighting systems, wheelchair lift equipment, tire service, and seat repairs
Performs other duties as assigned.
Job Specifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Required)
Ability to communicate in the English language both orally and in writing; strong interpersonal skills; ability to take directions;

Minimum Qualifications
Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.
Experience: Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of the application, Must successfully complete the Bus Driver training program provided by Petersburg City Public Schools.
License and Certification: Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air brake, passenger (P) and school bus (S) endorsements required to drive a school bus. No CDL is required to apply for the position. Valid Class A, B or C Driver's License required to apply for the position; required to have held an unrestricted driver's license for three or more years prior to application date; required to obtain a CDL permit before being hired into the bus driver training program. Bus Drivers receive American Heart Association certification during the training program and
must complete the required bi-annual training to maintain it (provided by PCPS).
Working Conditions and Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to use hands to touch, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. In case of emergency the employee must be able to lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job the
employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
