Job summary

Middlesex County School District invites applications for a Bus Shop Mechanic in Saluda, Virginia. The role supports the Director of Operations, maintaining all school board vehicles, with a 12-month, 261-day schedule and a starting date of July 1, 2026.

The ideal candidate will hold a high school diploma, a valid driver's license and a CDL with school and passenger bus endorsements or be able to obtain them within 12 months; Virginia Inspection License preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect and diagnose mechanical and electrical malfunctions in automobiles and buses.
  • Repair and replace defective or worn parts and accessories.
  • Perform preventive maintenance work, lubrication and inspection on automobiles and buses.
  • Perform major and minor engine tune-ups and overhauls.
  • Install emergency equipment on buses.
  • Operate diagnostic equipment and evaluate readings.
  • Diagnose auto/truck air conditioning and repairs.
  • Diagnose ABS systems, brakes and related components.
  • Operate tire changing equipment and inspect/repair tires.
  • Steam clean engines.
  • Respond to service calls.
  • Assist in training new automotive maintenance staff.
  • Perform duties as a school bus driver when needed.
  • Operate a PC and other office equipment.
  • Meet deadlines under stress and resolve conflicts.
  • Complete multiple priority projects with conflicting deadlines.
  • Perform routine maintenance checks every 10k miles or every 30 days.
  • Keep work area neat and clean.
  • Perform other related work as required by Director of Operations/ Fleet Manager.
  • Abide by all MCPS Policies and Regulations.

Job Description

POSITION TITLE: Bus Shop Mechanic

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 12 months 261 days

SALARY: Support VI $37,626 - 55,434

FLSA: Non-Exempt

REPORTS TO: Director of Operations

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

To perform skilled work in the repair and maintenance of all school board vehicles.

QUALIFICATIONS

Applicant must have:

  • A high school diploma or GED certificate.
  • A valid driver's license.
  • A valid CDL license with school and passenger bus endorsements is required, or must be able to obtain within (12) months of employment. MCPS will conduct the training.
  • A valid Virginia State Inspection License is strongly preferred, or must be able to obtain within (12) months of employment.
  • Must be able to pass a background check and drug test.
  • Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs.
  • Ability to operate all vehicle types in the division.
  • Demonstrate an ability to do skilled automotive mechanical work, on gas and diesel vehicles.
  • Ability to maintain good working relationships with other employees.
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Inspects and diagnoses mechanical and electrical malfunctions in automobiles and buses.
  • Repairs and replaces defective or worn parts and accessories.
  • Performs preventive maintenance work, lubrication and inspection on automobiles and buses.
  • Performs major and minor engine tune-ups. Also overhauls engines, transmissions, differentials, front ends, steering gears and braking systems.
  • Installs emergency equipment on buses.
  • Operates diagnostic equipment and evaluates readings.
  • Diagnoses auto/truck air conditioners and repairs.
  • Diagnoses ABS systems, repairs brakes and related components.
  • Operates tire changing equipment, inspects and repairs tires and tubes.
  • Steam cleans engines.
  • Responds to service calls.
  • Assists in training new automotive maintenance and transportation employees.
  • Performs duties as a school bus driver when needed.
  • Operate a personal computer and other modern office equipment.
  • Meets deadlines under stressful conditions.
  • Resolves conflict and responds appropriately to complaints.
  • Completes multiple priority projects with conflicting deadlines.
  • Performs related tasks as required.
  • Performs ten-thousand mile or 30 day preventive maintenance check-ups and services on all school vehicles.
  • Keeps work area neat and clean.
  • Performs other related work as required by the Director of Operations and/or Fleet Manager.
  • Abides by all Middlesex County School Board Policies and Regulations.

Ability to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.

Physical Ability : Tasks involve the ability to exert very heavy physical effort in very heavy work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of heavy objects and materials (up to 100 pounds) and occasionally heavier items (100 pounds or over).
