Job summary

The State of West Virginia seeks a District Bridge Evaluation Engineer to perform professional engineering duties, including structural load analysis of bridges and advanced design review. You will supervise staff and ensure accuracy and safety in highway bridge evaluations.

This role requires travel, a valid driver's license, and provides opportunities to guide internal and contracted engineers in bridge safety and design integrity.

Nature of Work

Under limited supervision of the District Bridge Engineer, the selected applicant will perform professional engineering as the District Bridge Evaluation Engineer. Will perform structural load analysis of bridges, requiring the ability to apply modern bridge theory and principles, calculating complex mathematical equations, and troubleshooting results to ensure validity. Will supervise and train evaluation staff in the same. Will review and approve new bridge design work of internal and contracted professional engineers by checking plans and performing structural load analysis. Provide assistance, supervision, and guidance to subordinates. This position requires travel; therefore a valid driver's license is required. Performs other work as required.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Preference may be given to Candidates with these qualifications**
Training/Education
  • Current license as a registered professional engineer in West Virginia.
  • No substitutions.
Experience
  • Six (6) years of highway engineering experience involving the design, construction, or maintenance of highways.
  • Substitution #1: Master of Science degree in civil engineering from a regionally accredited college or university may be substituted for one (1) year of the required experience. Please attach your degree's transcript or diploma to your application.
OR
  • Substitution #2: Non-highway engineering experience may be substituted for the highway engineering experience at the rate of two (2) years of general experience for one (1) year of highway-related experience. Note: Experience must have been acquired after the obtainment of the bachelor’s degree but may have occurred before or after registration as a professional engineer.

Salary and Wages

Direct deposit (twice a month)

Medical Insurance

The state provides a $10,000 decreasing term life policy with accidental death and dismemberment benefits. Additional group insurance is available.

Retirement Plan

The state offers an outstanding defined benefit pension plan. Employee contributes 4.5% of salary (tax-deferred).

Deferred Compensation

State employees have a unique opportunity to build retirement savings and reduce today's taxes by participating in a Section 457 deferred compensation plan. A 457 plan is similar to the 401K plans offered by private companies.

Annual Increment Pay

The annual increment is $60 for each full year of qualifying service, and is paid in July of each year. This is available to employees with 3 or more years of service.

Holidays

Twelve (12) paid holidays in each year.

Vacation

15 to 24 days per year depending on length of service.

Paid Sick Leave

We offer an outstanding paid sick leave benefit. Employees earn 1.5 days each month or 18 days per year. There is no limit to the amount of sick leave an employee can accumulate. Full compliance with Family Medical Leave and WV Parental Leave Act. Employee to Employee Leave Donation Program.
