Join the Porter County Government as a Highway Engineer and contribute to the development and maintenance of vital infrastructure. This role involves overseeing highway and stormwater projects, ensuring public safety, and enhancing community growth through effective engineering solutions.
Company Description
This is a unique opportunity to be part of the dynamic team in the Porter County Department of Development and Storm Water Management (DDSWM). The Department oversees planning and new development, conducts in-house engineering for stormwater and highway projects, and coordinates efforts to enhance unincorporated Porter County as its population grows.
As an in-house Transportation Engineer, you will experience the beauty and variety of landscapes Porter County offers. With nearly 800 miles of roadway, the highway system connects Lake Michigan and the Indiana Dunes to the Kankakee River and wetlands. It also includes hundreds of miles of storm water infrastructure, such as drains, creeks, rivers, wetlands, culverts, and storm water management systems. The county's proximity to Illinois and Chicago contributes to ongoing growth and increased demand for construction and inspections.
The mission of the Porter County Highway Engineering Division is to provide quality engineering design and project management for County infrastructure, including roads, bridges, culverts, and storm water systems. The division also supports other Departmental Divisions, County Departments, and residents, always prioritizing public safety, health, and welfare.
Role Description
The Engineering Division oversees inspection, construction, repair, and maintenance of the County’s storm water and highway infrastructure. The Transportation Engineer will provide engineering services related to highway infrastructure, conducting investigations, analysis, and evaluation of issues like highway use, safety, pavement, culvert and bridge conditions, and drainage. The role involves planning, designing, and reviewing projects including repairs, construction, and capital improvements.
