Job summary

The Washington State Department of Transportation is seeking a Lacey Design Project Engineer to lead transportation design projects, provide engineering oversight as a licensed PE, and ensure on-schedule, on-budget delivery that meets WSDOT quality standards.

You will oversee project performance, promote accountability, and collaborate with legislators, agencies, and stakeholders to deliver safe, high-quality transportation solutions for Washington's long-term needs.

Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer licensure in WA or another state with WA licensure within 6 months.
  • Ability to support or lead strategic planning, prioritization, and resource alignment.
  • Extensive civil engineering knowledge of design and construction principles, contracting methods.
  • Experience managing complex capital transportation projects within scope, schedule, budget, risk.
  • Familiarity with laws, permits, and agency policies including environmental requirements.
  • Ability to plan budgets, schedules, staffing, and consultant resources.
  • Proven leadership and staff supervision with accountability.
  • Stakeholder collaboration with internal/external partners.
  • Clear communication and reporting to executive leadership.
  • Driver’s license and ability to travel to project sites.
  • Growth mindset and service-oriented.
  • Willingness to work evenings/weekends.
  • Preferred: design-build, change management, public-sector transportation experience.

Responsibilities

  • Lead an engineering office delivering transportation design projects on schedule, within budget, and in compliance with quality management standards.
  • Provide engineering oversight to ensure project documentation, risk management, and deliverables meet standards and procedures.
  • Certify design deliverables by applying a Professional Engineer (PE) stamp.
  • Plan and manage project budgets, schedules, workforce resources, and CIP delivery strategies.
  • Monitor and report project scope, schedules, budgets, and performance to leadership to promote accountability.
  • Collaborate with internal teams, support offices, external partners, and stakeholders to achieve goals.
  • Support construction activities by providing engineering expertise and partnering with leadership to implement outreach strategies.
  • Develop and lead staff by overseeing personnel actions, fostering a safe/inclusive workplace, and promoting growth.
  • Advise on project delivery methods and ensure compliance with policies and environmental requirements.
