Job summary

State of Washington Dept. of Transportation (WSDOT) is seeking a Traffic Design Engineer to join the Olympic Region Traffic Office. You will supervise a team of engineers and evaluate development and local agency projects that affect the state highway system.

You will ensure highway projects are designed and delivered in compliance with WSDOT standards, specifications, and policies, delivering safe and cost-effective transportation solutions while fostering an inclusive work environment.

Qualifications

• Engineering principles, methods, and practices applied to transportation projects or construction environments.
• Ability to review designs and documentation to ensure accuracy, compliance, and constructability.
• Proficiency with Windows-based systems and engineering software (MS Office, SharePoint, Teams) and cloud-based platforms.

Responsibilities

• Lead reviews of traffic projects to ensure compliance with standards (MUTCD) and project requirements.
• Coordinate multidisciplinary reviews with regional experts on ITS, signals, illumination, and traffic control.
• Review traffic control plans and final plans to verify compliance and approve accordingly.
• Attend project meetings to develop construction staging and support safe work zones.
• Provide guidance to project teams, developers, consultants, and local agencies through meetings and written communications.
• Assess field implementation, identify deficiencies, and recommend corrective actions.
• Develop and review RFPs and traffic-related requirements for DB and PDB projects.
• Support updates to traffic policies, manuals, and standard plans with stakeholder feedback.
